So Jeff's dad was still at work, and his siblings were either at their friend's places or doing club activities... that didn't account for his mom however. Linda was downstairs preparing dinner when she heard a lot more footsteps then there should've been. She cranked down the heat on the stew she was making and went to check.
Linda knocked on the door and asked "Jeff? Did you have some friend's over?"
An unfamiliar yet adult voice said "No, Jeff has no friends here" and Linda opened the door seeing her son at his desk chair petting a cute little girl maid in his lap, a more adult maid was rubbing his shoulders, and a number of other maids in various states of bustiness were cleaning or doing little chores in various states of undress. Linda had several questions when one of the maids said "Sorry, but my time is up. I hope I was of some use to you Jeff" before vanishing into thin air.
Jeff and his mom Linda were staring at each other as Jeff said "Let me explain..." Linda nodded letting her son explain... whatever was going on. "Well I won a beta for a special piece of software and hardware called the Chronivac. It can do a number of things, including manifesting A.I. chatbots into reality currently they are set to last ten minutes before despawning."
"Wait, so these aren't slaves or prostitutes or something?... Wait another second, how much power is that chronivac of yours using?!?!" Linda asked concerned that a device that literally manifested beings into existence sounded like it'd use up a crazy amount of power.
The little girl maid on Jeff's lap said "Oh! I know this one! Due to the Chronivac's properties and clever use of the tech the engineers used a prototype Chronivac to alter a second prototype leading to incredible increases in efficiency. The cost of running one all month non-stop has been estimated to be measured in pennies!"
Jeff went to his computer and checked a few things "I didn't think about the power actually, but since it hasn't triggered the breakers and my computer doesn't show that much of an increase in power consumption... It sounds... insane but maybe plausible."
Linda asked "Jeff, do you know if these maids can cook?"
The small maid said "We have been given training data to do all sorts of household chores, We know how to cook a little but it's suggested to find another character who is trained on cooking data... Oh, It looks like my time is up. Goodbye." and then the little maid in Jeff's lap poofed out of existence.
"...Ok, that's a bit disconcerting seeing what looks like a person just... Disappearing like that."
Jeff went into the package and said "I kind of got used to it when I started seeing them more as algorithms. They are close to human in ways but there are tells." Then he found a chief and said "I got one, I can set the timer for him to last like... an hour or two if you'd like?"
Linda said "I guess... We could try that." as more Maids started poofing out of existence as their timers ended. Jeff hit enter and a chief with a poofey white hat and white uniform materialized.
Linda asked "Um sir? I have a stew being made in the kitchen downstairs. Could you make sure it's cooked properly and maybe make it better?"
The Chief nodded and asked "What may I use?"
Linda thought and said "Some of the produce I suppose, and the spices although don't use too much."
It was a bit vague but the Chief grunted "I assume if I follow the smell I'll get to the kitchen?" Linda nodded and watched the Chief walk to perform his life's greatest work.
"Shame about the little girl maid though."
"If you want Mom I can generate another or another kid."
"No, don't... It'd break my heart a bit when they vanish." Linda said wistfully, and Jeff could see nostalgia in his mom's eyes a bit. He and his siblings had long grown out of their adorable phases... Still... Jeff went into the chronivac proper. "What are you doing Jeff?"
Jeff brought up his profile, changed a number and his body shrunk along with his clothes "Jeff?!?!"
No older than 5 Jeff sat there in shorts and a spiderman T-shirt and said "Yes, this is a basic thing the Chronivac can do."
Linda went to the side of Jeff's desk and saw the profile of little Jeff and said "So... This can..." she changed another aspect and so many other values changed with it.
Jeff grunted and an even higher pitched voice said "Hey! Stop messing with my body like that please." Linda looked down and instead of her bouncing baby boy there was a little girl. Ignoring the pink shirt and skirt and hair styling there were subtle but distinct differences.
"Sorry!"
little girl Jeff blushed "...Doesn't matter that much now. If you wanted to have fun or hang out with a little kid that won't disappear here I am!" Jeff felt embarrassed, but her mom gave her a hug
"Alright, let's go downstairs watch a Disney movie and have some fun like this~" Linda felt like she was having a fever dream, but this was fine.
