Ty's Power

Scaling up

added by prevert 20 hours ago O

Ty tried to come up with a way to solve the problem, to reassemble the four billion Lisa pieces, more quickly. He couldn't wait millions of years. Even a single year would be unbearable. He only had half an hour until dinner. Even with the special alarm clock that altered the passage of time, that was only 75 days. He could probably make the clock support an even higher ratio, but that just wasn't going to cut it.

He needed a more powerful supercomputer. At least 25 million times faster, if he ran it in the influence of the special clock.

He tried to make his room 25 million times larger, to accomodate a computer that size. The room became so cavernous that he couldn't see from his desk to any of the walls. He tried to will the bigger computer into existence. Nothing happened!

He did some experiments with willing bigger computers into existence, starting at only ten times the size of El Capitan, and working up. He found that it was difficult to make one a hundred times larger, and he couldn't make one a thousand times larger. The 100x system wasn't going to help, so he wished it away again.

After considering the problem longer, and more experimentation, he found that the issue was one of mass. He couldn't actually create something out of nothing, at least on a large scale. Apparently when he created things, the mass had to come from somewhere. He wasn't sure exactly where the mass came from, but there seemed to be a limited supply he could draw upon.

Okay, he reasoned, I can't create a big enough comouter system out of nothing, so what could I transform? He was probably going to have to do this outside their bedrooms, without the benefit of the special alarm clock, to have a source of enough mass to draw upon. That meant that he needed an even bigger supercomputer, to solve the problem in only half an hour of real-world time. Instead of a comouter 25 million times more powerful than. El Capitan, it needed to be 90 billion times more powerful.

He couldn't even do it, he realized. There wasn't even enough space on Eart, or enough mass that he could repurpose without causing problems.

Wait a minute, he thought. Who says I have to do it on Earth?
