Hector lifted up a small, tablet like device.
[PARTS RANDOMIZER] stood in big bold letters on the cardboard packaging. A little cutout with an arrow pointing to a button says "Try me!". Hector, in all his curiosity, pressed the button.
The tablet whirred to life. It had a fake "sci-fi" holo screen sound effect and could only produce blue, black and white. The figure on the screen seemed like a generic male. Buttons were placed on the side, which Hector started clicking. Easily amused, he created random figures of height, hair, gender, and more, before he decided to buy it. Turning it over he winced at the price. About $30. Kinda expensive for a toy like this, and this was at a 50% discount, judging by the slash of the $60! However, it was amusing....
He sighed as he placed the toy at the counter. A bearded old man looked up from his newspaper on the counter, his balding head evident in comparison to the mass of well-groomed gray hairs hanging from his chin. He raised an eyebrow, standing up, making the Magicks R' Us tag on his chest more evident.
"Ah, will that be all?"
"Yeah." An awkward silence stood between the two Hector, shuffling in his wallet to take out the dollar bills. The old man stopped him for a moment.
"Say, there is an upgraded version of this. I'll give you the same discount, since it's the same price. To be honest, I must have forgotten to take it off the shelf. Here." He reached under the counter, pulling a similar box, except now with a rainbow swirl on the front, advertising [NOW WITH COLOR!].
"Should be more worth your time and money." The man smiled kindly.
Hector shrugged placing down 2 twenties after giving up on his coins. "Keep the change." He picked up the device and headed back home.
As Hector left, the wizard laughed to himself, observing the object originally placed down. "Parts randomizer, huh? Well, at least he'll have an interesting time." He inspected the device more closely.
"I'm glad I gave him the new one. This one was inclined to make people ugly. At least they fixed that tendency in the newer one. Look forward to when he comes back."
Hector unpackaged the device in the chair of his desk. It was a small apartment he lived in, but he made do. He worked a job as a financial advisor, which you would think pays well but really didn't. At least, nowadays where people couldn't really afford his services. But he at least managed to scrounge up enough money for a couple of weights and a decent home gaming setup. Everything he could get for these off days where his hours weren't really long.
