Diego was as awe-struck by the view from the space station window as everyone else had been, but he quickly turned away, and started asking Ty questions about the station and supercomputer.
"You've never gone out either of the hatches?" Diego asked.
"No," Ty answered. Although I made sure there were space suits, if anything went wrong, and we had to evacuate in suits, the only viable resolution would be to teleport back to my bedroom, and I can just do that directly. And the interior hatch is basically just to an enormous network of station and supercomputer maintenance corridors. There was no reason to have life support for any parts of the station other than this control room, so a spacesuit would be needed to go through that hatch."
Diego looked at the station dedication plaque, and grunted.
Diego asked questions about the prominent power panel, and then about the computer. Ty turned on the monitor, and Diego saw that the screen showed the LisaRescueOS 1.0 boot up banner, a few commands Ty had entered to copy files, the invocation of the program, and the eventual error message. "What does this error at the end mean?"
Ty said, "It's inconsequential. You see that the percentage is zero."
Diego replied, "Where my daughter's safety is concerned, I really don't want to take it for granted that anything is inconsequential."
"Fair," Ty said. "That message indicates a problem with an estimated twenty thousand pieces out of over four billion. So it really is basically nothing."
"All right," Diego said, "I'll accept that. But I want to know more about this problem of four billion pieces."
"Dad," Lisa said. "Please don't make Ty and I explain that. Please just recognize that Ty fixed the problem, which was more my fault than his, and then he's confessed breaking the rules."
"Yes," Ty said. "I'd still rather not explain the problem, but I did confess breaking your rules, and I take full responsibility for that. I'm prepared for anything you want me to do about it."
Diego looked to June. She said, "I agree with Lisa, that you don't need to insist that they explain the problem, as that's not the important thing. Ty confessed to me first, because I happened to see him before you did. But he wanted to get this off his chest. In my opinion, he did the right thing, and I said I wouldn't punish him for violating my rules. But I don't presume to tell you what you should do about Ty violating your rules."
Diego pondered for a while. "OK, I won't make you explain the problem. And you violated the rule about letting us know where you go, in good faith, as you believed it necessary for Lisa's well-being, so there's no punishment for that. But I'm not going to let you off so lightly on breaking the rule about harming Lisa. Since you..."
Lisa interrupted, "Dad! It was my fault! I asked him to do it!"
"Don't interrupt," Diego said. "Even if you asked, he's the one that did... whatever it was. And since you won't even tell me what it was, I have to consider it as though it was a huge failure in judgement. While it's mitigated by the fact that Ty repaired the problem, I can't just let it slide. I will have to discuss with Maria what an appropriate punishment is. I will let you know later."
"Yes, Diego." Ty said "I understand."
"Now despite that, I am quite impressed, absolutely amazed, at what you've created here," Diego said. "And Maria is much more of a space enthusiast than I am, so even though she doesn't like your supernatural abilities, I think she is going to want to see this. Do you mind bringing her here?"
"Of course she's welcome!" Ty said.
"Can we go back? And if she's not busy, bring her here now?" Lisa asked.
"Certainly," Ty said. "Let's hold hands again."
They did, and again, everthing changed around them.
