Aftrr school that afternoon, as promised, June took Ty to the DMV, where 5hey filled out the paperwork for him to apply for a learner's permit, and he took the written test. As they left, June asked Ty if he'd like to drive them home. Ty was excited. June gave him some basic instructions. He was nervous at first, but he did a good job, and they were soon home.
Once they were home, June said, "If you don't mind, I'm going to transform myself to app form, and do more of my accounting work. I remember the things you told me last time, about planning, and transforming back, but since this is still fairly new to me, would you mind supervising, in case anything goes wrong?"
"Of course, Mom. I'll be glad to," Ty said. "I've got some studying to do, which I'll do in the normal way while you're an app. Would you mind doing it in my room, to make it easier for me to keep an eye on you."
"That's fine, Ty. I don't particularly care whereI do it." They went to Ty's room, and June put her phone on Ty's desk. "Ready?" she asked.
"Go for it, Mom," Ty said. "Just text me when you're done." With that, she disappeared, and her phone beeped. Given her plan, Given that she had a plan, he wouldn't need to open the app on her phone, but just to check, he pulled out his own phone, and texted her. "Everything OK? Doing your work?"
June texted him back immediately. "Everything is fine. I am doing my accounting work."
He sat down and opened his textbook to study.
Half an hour later, he heard a pair of beers from June's phone, and a message alert from his own. He was expecting her to text that she was done, but the actual message from her was, "My battery is low. Please plug me into a charger."
I should have thought of that earlier, he thought. He plugged June's phone into his charger, which he kept at the desk. She texted him again, "That feels nice. Thank you."
He continued with his assigned reading, and about twenty minutes later, just as he was finishing, he received another text from June. "All finished," she wrote. "Will transform back now." Her phone made a beep, and her human form reappeared.
"You did fine," Ty said. "Imthink you're ready to do it fully on your own."
"Thank you, Ty.," June replied. "It's didn't matter to me so much after I transformed into the app, but up until that moment, I was comforted to know that you were right here for me. Now I should do a little housework and start preparing dinner." She kissed his forehead, and left his room.
The rest of Ty's afternoon and evening passed uneventfully.
