Transform or Dare?

Playing the fool.

Jennifer groaned, she was back to being fourteen again. Jennifer flipped off her covers as she stretched. She hated losing her girls, the missing weight on her chest was like a piece of food stuck in her teeth, annoyingly ever present.

Jennifer made her way to the bathroom, groggily not noticing that her surroundings had changed again. Looking in the mirror she could barely see half her face. She hated the "runt" part of the curse, why did she need to be so short? Finishing her morning business, Jennifer returned to her side of the apartment.

She saw the alarm clock blinking. It was Tuesday. Slowly piecing it together she'd gone forward a day, but back a year. Dad's call was yesterday then. Jennifer grumbled as she started to get dressed. None of her outfits from yesterday were here, and she became increasingly upset over it. It wasn't fair, even time wouldn't let her look pretty.

Jennifer heard a stomp in the other room as her dad was probably waking up. She heard is voice. "Jennifer wake up, you only got a few minutes before school." weariness in his voice. Jennifer nodded to herself. "I'm already up." she yelled back as she slid into a pair of jeans. As she was tying her shoes she spotted a piece of paper on her nightstand where her schoolbag was laying. Moving to look at it as she picked up her bag she was confused. It was a report she had written, she remembered it too, it was a solid A+, but here it said now a D. Jennifer saw a smattering of red ink circling words, underlining sentences and plenty of comments. It was a grammatical word salad, Jennifer actually writing out the "um"s and "like"s in her sentences.

Jennifer shrugged, school just wasnt important to her anymore, she would rather go back to the mall or maybe just stay home or something. Nevertheless Jennifer left her side as she met her dad already waiting for her by the door.

"Come on kiddo." He said. Jennifer was taken back, a kid? No she was big right? Jennifer winced, well maybe not, she only came up to just over his waist, she must have been like 4'7 or like 4'10 something. Jennifer couldn't really space out the measurements well.

Getting into the car Jennifer quickly noticed the car wasn't going in the direction it had yesterday. The large sign as the car pulled in made Jennifers heart sink. Westwood Middle. "Why middle school? I'm fourteen right?" Jennifer asked, her voice dripping with confusion. Otto shook his head, "Well you were held back last year remember? You'll be in highschool next year Im sure sweety."

Jennifer's heart sank again, did that mean her report in her room wasn't even a highschool one?

As Jennifer was dropped off she had expected another easy boring day at school, yet it was anything but. Each topic felt confusing and more illusive to grasp. Math, her once favorite subject because of how well she did was now a paper of runes she couldn't barely understand. What was the order of operations again? What formula should be used here? What even is that symbol? Jennifer became more frustrated, before giving up entirely, moving to turn in the half completed, if even, worksheet to her teacher.

The other subjects throughout the day were just the same, science was even worse, english was spent doodling and atleast history was just the teacher going "blah blah blah" for a hour and could be zoned out.

Jennifer felt like she had escaped a war zone, she was drained after today as she finally was able to be picked up by her dad. She didnt really complain to him about it due to a bit of embarrassment, but he probably already knew anyways.

Back at the house Jennifer noticed a packet of a yellow envelope on the dinner table. A paper peaking out. Jennifer looked around as saw her dad's back turned around making dinner. Curiously she pulled the paper to see what it was. It was a letter from a the doctors office. Jennifer immediately started to glaze by reading it as half the medical jargon didnt make sense, but a few words did stand out. It was a IQ test for Jennifer, it was dated last year back when she failed 8th grade. Jennifer winced, she thought she had a 110 score, but the result clearly stated 78. Jennifer stuck out the paper as she moved it to her room, she'd have to look at it later.

Dinner was made simple again, but Jennifer didn't care too much, in a certain light she was content. That night Jennifer crashed out as she was already drained from school. Her eyes heavy like anchors as she found herself quickly asleep. The IQ tests results fluttering in a gust as the number already began to change.
