The raccoon formerly known as Mary is suddenly overwhelmed with exhaustion. Her eyelids blink slowly. Her gait is clumsy and stumbling. She staggers about the room, confused and unsure of how to express it. Why is she so tired?
It's mid-day, that's why. Raccoons being nocturnal animals, she's out of synch with her natural sleeping patterns. Instinct takes over as she searches for a safe place to sleep in and hide, so that no other creatures bother her as she does so.
She finally settles upon her bedroom, not knowing that it's her bedroom, instead focusing on the space beneath the bed cluttered with junk. She slips underneath, curling up and lying down in the midst of all this clutter that her instincts tell her should keep her safe until nightfall when it's time to get up and forage.
