"Oh for God sakes Mom, you're telling me I'm gonna turn into a fucking ANIMAL!! This is NOTHING alike!!!"
Heather jerked herself out of the car, slamming the door shut on her mother before Debra had time to respond. She almost ran away from the vehicle but realized quickly how ragged out she must look from her anger and her tears. Heather stood with a determined back to the Porsche as she fished in her purse for tissues and her compact. She prolonged the affair long enough to ensure that her mother would drive away and leave the discussion for later.
Sure enough, Heather heard her mother begin to slowly roll away at the same time that she saw Dita quickly approach her from the corner of her eye.
"Hey, chica, what's going on?" Dita almost sang the question to her in her bouncing cheery voice. "You and mom wake up on the wrong sides of the bed this morning?"
Heather tried to choose her words carefully. She really had not thought ahead to an encounter with her best friend. A lot of people mistook the combination of Dita's voice, natural, flowing blond hair, and flighty green eyes to mean she wasn't the brightest bulb in the box. Really, Heather knew Dita observed a lot she did not admit, and had better perception than most people she knew, even her own mom.
"Something like that," Heather looked down as she replied, knowing she blurted out an obvious put off to her friend.
"Ok, so don't talk about it," Dita grabbed Heather's hand and pulled her toward the school, "but we still gotta go to class."
Heather and Dita started down the walk to the main entrance. Slowly pulling her hand away as they strolled Heather spoke, "Listen, do you think we could talk at lunch, just the two of us?"
Dita responded with a small laugh, "Well, if you think you need to be so serious about asking me to break away from the pack," Heather's face tightened, "it must be deep. Of course, girl, you never need to ask for quality time with the Deet."
