Despite her body's objections, she quickly reached down and grabbed the Chronivac. Quaid opened his eyes in surprise, but as this was completely unexpected, Cherry found it fairly easy to shove Quaid to the floor, buying herself the few vital seconds necessary to sort this mess out. From the floor, Quaid's eyes shone with fear, and towering over him, Cherry thought this apt. She tried to say something witty, but her brain stumbled over the words.
"Well, uh. You may have made me, like, dumb, but I ain't, like, stupid," she settled on.
"Look, don't do anything hasty. Come on, I was drunk on power. Please, you're not a bad person," he said.
"I don't reckon that's good enough. Like, you know? You did turn me into something proper unfair, like. You barely gave me a choice," she said.
"But obviously I did. I mean, look, you're resisting now, aren't you?" he asked.
"Yeah, but it's not like I want to," she said, realising her mistake instantly. Quaid saw his opportunity.
"You don't want to resist me?" he asked.
"Well, no, of course not, you done this to me, of course I don't," she said, lowering the Chronivac slightly.
"How do you know it's just the Chronivac? I mean, can't you even trust yourself? Can't you trust your own feelings?" he asked, propping himself up slightly.
Again, her mind began to fold in on itself, and as frequently happens, she found herself confronted with multiple options, each able to branch out in their own obscure ways.
