I can't believe this, Amy thought to herself as they walked through the chilly evening air. She had to re-buckle her belt one notch inwards to keep her pants on. I must be down to five feet by now. How much worse is this going to get? She was following Lina's lead, trying to keep up with her wider gait. The platforms she was in weren't helping, but she didn't want to stop to take them off. The sooner they got to the store, the faster this blasted collar was going to be off her neck.
"When they get your height fixed, I think I'm going to keep mine," Lina said heartily. "Hey, I'm going to need a new wardrobe!" She turned in the direction of a clothing store, but Amy tugged back on the leash.
"We don't have time," Amy argued. "Besides, you're gonna be even bigger after we get this off, so buying new clothes now would be a waste." Amy knew Lina didn't care about her first point, but she definitely would about the second.
"Yeah, you're right," Lina said, giving a fleeting look at the window mannequins. "But on the way back." They continued their walk toward the shop.
The sky was beginning to get dark and Amy desperately hoped it was still open. She heard her shoes scraping and looked down at her feet. The platforms were no longer doing their job. Her pants' hemline was now drooping down to the ground, even with the four-inch soles. She looked up and saw the storefront up the block...they had reached it! As Lina pushed on the door, Amy was amazed at how far up she had to look to see her six-foot friend. Craning her neck actually started to make her dizzy, which didn't help her balance any better once Lina had entered, leaving Amy rooted to the spot. She fell down hard, bruising her arm.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Amy!" Lina said, genuinely apologetic. "I have to be more careful, you could really get hurt at your size."
The remark hurt Amy much more than the bruise did. Was her best friend actually treating her like a child? Trying to shake off her anger, Amy looked around to find the man they had seen before. Nobody was in sight. "At least they're still open," she said as Lina helped her up. Amy took the time to roll her pants back up to her ankles so they wouldn't trip her. "Let's try some of the aisles."
"Wish we could split up," Lina said, following Amy toward the aisle where she had gotten the collar in the first place. "I'd like to try the clothing aisle first...or at least find some scissors. This shirt is really tight."
