"Don't worry--our cows are very happy--someday she might make a good waitress!"
The waitress examined Alexis' progress during the milking. She was impressed. "She's a real good one!"
Jon watched as she continued to change into a human-cow. "How long does she stay here?"
"Well", the waitress replied, "they usually spend a little bit of time in here, you know, just getting used to the whole cow thing, then they get reviewed."
"Reviewed?"
"Yer, we get the farming and management staff in from the island and they look at all our ladies. Then they either get moved out to another part of the island, or they stay here. She might get promoted to waitress if she works hard!"
The waitress removed the suckers off of her teets. Alexis fell back, smiling and panting for breath, as her face became more bovine in features.
Jon stroked her fur to relax her. "What happens if her milking isn't so good in a few weeks?"
The waitress turned to Jon. "She'll get reassigned."
"To what?"
"There's alot of work goin' for someone like her. Maybe milkin' to be sold in vending machines, maybe for breedin', maybe even for beef."
"Beef?!"
"Sure. You eaten a burger on the island yet?"
"Yeh..." Jon began to feel slightly nauseous.
"Might have been the old Stall 3. Sent off the other week."
Jon began to protest. "What?! You can't do this!"
"Sure we can, hun! I had to go through the review. All the other gals will, too. It's all part of bein' put into the food chain. Your gal signed herself up when she came in with that balloon."
The waitress picked up the fresh milk and took it behind the bar. Jon looked at Alexis, still oblivious to the situation from her milking.
