Midnight was approaching, and Sonya was dwindling. She had stopped making her platform boots grow, and had actually decided to shorten them a few inches because she was having trouble balancing on them. Now her head only went up to Derek's shoulders, a marked change over when they had entered. She had dipped down to 4'9", and with her heels only at six inches, that was a full foot below where she should have been.
Derek was running all of these measurement calculations in his mind as he eyed his date. Her skirt had a few strips ripped off the bottom to keep her knees exposed. It was a very well-done design; Though Sonya had simply torn off the bottom hem, it showed no sign of anything having been there, as if it was manufactured to be that short and never any longer.
Sonya had to resort to rolling up her sleeves in order to keep them from extending many inches beyond her arms. Her gothy bracelets looked like they could easily slip right off, and it was taking Sonya a good deal of effort not to move too suddenly that they did, or that her sleeves would droop, or that she'd lose her balance.
"Maybe you've had enough," he whispered to her after she had broke off a long discussion with some theater friends.
"I barely drank anything tonight," she scowled.
"I mean, shrinking," he said sternly. "You look like you're a middle-schooler trying to fit in with the party."
Sonya only chuckled at this remark. "That's cute! Maybe I should start talking to some of those jocks and see if they'd recognize me. I've only met them a couple of times."
"Hey, listen!" Derek said, more concerned than ever. "You're taking an awful big risk here. What if..."
Sonya stared at him with a face that dared him to keep speculating about how she could screw her shrinking plans up.
"What if you get in trouble, and I'm not around? You're not so big anymore, and I'll bet not as strong either."
A big smile formed on her face. She took her leash and once again placed it into his hand.
"Then my big strong boyfriend will just have to protect little old Sonya," she said in a baby voice.
Derek shook his head, but couldn't keep the grin off his face. He didn't want to keep going with Sonya's plan, not now that she was so small already, but there was still that nagging feeling inside of him that got excited by what Sonya was doing...and possibly what she wanted to do later that night.
"C'mon everybody!" Kevin called from the back porch. "Kyle brought some fireworks and we've only got six minutes to go!"
Derek and Sonya stayed close as the entire crowded room started to file out into Kevin's back yard.
