Altered Fates

Jared Doesn't Live Here Anymore

added 16 years ago O

Kevin was immediately caught offguard as soon as he entered the house. In the archway to the kitchen, there were two dog dishes, one filled with dried dog food and the other with water. Through the screendoor that lead to the backyard, there was a dog house visible out there with a metal tie in the ground meant for tying a dog to in order to limit his range. There was even a dog door to the outside in the kitchen.

The sight was almost too much for Kevin to take in, that he dropped the leash which allowed Shaggy to run into the kitchen and stick his muzzle into one of the dishes to greedily lap up the aqua refreshment. Kevin even began to notice that there were no pictures of Jared present anywhere in the living room, and the family photos usually had a large old english sheepdog in them in place of where Jared use to be.

'What about his room...?' wondered Kevin as he hesitantly made his way upstairs and approached the door that normally lead to his older brother's room. Turning the knob, the pre-teen felt the urge to faint but fought it off as he took in the sight. Jared's room was no more. It had been converted into a workspace with a computer and in the corner of the room was a dog bed with a few chew toys laying around it.

Shaggy soon wandered behind Kevin and pushed his way through to enter the room, trotting happily and wagging his little docked tail. The sheepdog approached his dog bed and laid down inside, picking up a squeaky baseball chew toy in his mouth and started gnawing on it. After a moment, Shaggy stood up and brought the toy over to his master and sat on his haunches in front in him. He looked at Kevin eagerly, waiting for him to take the toy out of his mouth and throw it or something.

Kevin only collapsed to his knees and stared at the ground. Shaggy, a little concerned, dropped the toy and moved in closer to his friend, letting out a worried whining sound. Kevin looked up and quickly wanted to look away, beginning to feel a sense of guilt. His eyes focused on the collar and the dog tag... that dog tag he wished for which caused this mess.

'Wait, maybe he'll change back if I take it off!' Kevin thought to himself in hopeful manner. Deciding to give it a try, Kevin reached for the collar and began to unbuckle it. Shaggy let out a confused low bark but Kevin told him to remain still. The collar was soon off and Kevin let out a cheer.

However, no change was happening at all. Kevin's heart sunk into the pit of his stomach as he noticed nothing was different. There were no changes to be noted. He even waited a few minutes to make sure but it was hopeless. Jared was now Shaggy for good. Kevin had erased his brother's existence entirely and made him into a dog for the rest of his life.

Kevin went ahead and put the collar back on Shaggy and then stood up, looming out the room and into his own bedroom, shutting the door behind him. He collapsed on the bed and laid there, lifeless. A moment later, Shaggy began pawwing at the door and whining. This only caused Kevin to begin crying.

Then Kevin thought to himself ironically, "This is what you wanted though, and you got it..."
