Hoping for a Companion

added by CW 16 years ago A

"I've come to accept my new form," the wolf girl says to you. "Most of us haven't, but I believe you could too, if you wanted to." She gives you a hopeful nuzzle.

"But I don't want to," you protest. "I didn't want to be an animal in the first place! I didn't even think that the spell would work!"

"Neither did I at first," she says. "But is it really so bad? We don't have to worry about conforming to someone else's schedule, or go to school on gorgeous warm days like today. Our parents can't tell us what to do, or when our bed time is. We can stay up as late as we want, and just howl at the moon! No one will object!"

"But I... I would miss my parents," you say sadly. "They weren't that bad. And I kinda liked hanging out with my friends at school." You also don't want to admit it, but school wasn't that bad either. You kinda had a passion for mathematics, but hid it from everyone but your teachers.

"The food's not so bad once you get used to things here," the wolf continues. "Most of the transformed humans become wolves and raccoons and foxes, very few of them turn into prey animals. We won't have to worry about accidentally eating a former human. And the forest provides so much prey for us that we wouldn't go hungry even if we wanted to, never again!"

You catch the last part and your ears lower just a little in sympathy. "Was your home life that bad?"

She realizes what she said, and she quickly turns her head away. "I... I sometimes wish I could just forget about it completely. Those of us who are taken over completely by our instincts are lucky."

You can sense that this is a sensitive subject for her, and so you try to change it. "Tell me more about life here. What's it like to sleep under the stars?"

She seems to smile a little, you can tell because the sparkle in her eyes returns. "Sometimes you howl at the moon for so long that you end up falling asleep under the brightening sky of dawn! And naps during the day never hurt!"

"Didn't you ever miss things from when you were a human?" you ask. "Opposable thumbs? Music? Pizza?" You still find it a little hard to believe that someone would just turn their back on being human.

"I didn't have any friends, and I never felt comfortable as a human," she replies, head down and turned away from you. "I didn't want to be a wolf at first, but I quickly learned how free I'd become. I don't want to give this up for anything, and... sometimes it does get lonely." She looks up at you and there's hope in your eyes. "Please, stay here? I could use some company."

Now it's your turn to look away. "Um..." If you could still blush, you know you would be blushing fiercely right now. "I, er..."

The she-wolf noses at you, seemingly clueless. "I've always wanted a pack of my own, and now that you're here..."

"But... but I'm too young for this!" you say desperately. "I'm barely in ninth grade! I don't want to... I mean... I'm sure you're a nice wolf, but... I just can't..." She watches you curiously, and despite that she used to be human, she doesn't seem to understand what you're saying.

"It's not so bad being a wolf," she repeats from earlier. "I can show you what you need to do to survive. Maybe we'll go for a run under the moonlight tonight? It's almost full, and when the moon's full, I always get a little... well, a little silly." She giggles a little.

"Could I think about it, at least?" you plead. "I'm not ready for this! I can barely walk in this form, let alone run around!" And it's true: while the rest of the animals have mostly departed by now, you and your new wolf friend have remained where you are. She's been circling you as you talk, and you've been laying there, twitching your paws and wishing you could just run away from this. As if to prove your point, you try to stand and you manage to get up to all fours, although you're a little shaky.

The she-wolf playfully sniffs at your rear and you manage to swat at her with your tail. "Don't do that!"

She looks away sheepishly. "Sorry."
