Going to Great Lengths

added 16 years ago AR BM

...button marked "+ Hair Length." Jamie stared at her babysitter who kept watching television, oblivious to the ray that had just struck her. Jamie could see Tricia's sandy-brown hair starting to grow rapidly. Soon it had snaked all the way down her back. Jamie couldn't see it grow anymore because the sofa's arm was blocking her view, so she moved in front of the couch.

Tricia noticed Jamie staring at her. "Jamie, you're supposed to be playing in your room." Then she saw the remote clutched in her tiny hands. "No! That's a bad girl. You don't go through other people's bags without their permission." She got up off the couch to take the remote back when a curtain of brown hair drooped over her face. "What the--?" Tricia pulled the locks back like a curtain and found that they reached almost down to her ankles. She screamed, causing Jamie to flinch, pressing another button on the remote: "- Age."

This time Tricia noticed the beam of light that shot straight at her, and she quickly moved to take the remote back. Jamie backed away, frightened. "It's okay," Tricia said through her thick brown hair. "Just give me back that remote." As she spoke she could hear her own voice cracking, shifting up in pitch. "And d-don't press any more b--!" She fell forward, hitting her head on the tv stand. Fortunately, her hair lightened the blow. She looked up just in time to see Jamie's legs ascending the staircase. She tried to pick herself up, but her tangles of hair made it difficult. She had to make sure she wasn't lying on parts of the strands close to her head or else she would snag herself.

She wasn't back on her feet for two seconds before she tried to take a step and tumbled forward onto the carpet again. Her shoes were far too big to walk in, and the rest of her clothes were baggy. Her skirt threatened to fall off her waist. Holding it up with one hand, she stood up again. This time, she looked herself over before trying to move.

Her frame had shortened substantially. The incredible five feet of hair would have been barely tolerable to her 18-year-old body, but she had noticeably regressed in age. Her hands were smaller and she had completely lost her teenage girl figure. She figured she was in the neighborhood of nine years old now, and her hair was dragging on the floor enough to trip her if she wasn't careful.

She listened for sounds of movement upstairs. Nothing. Jamie must have run into her bedroom to hide. Tricia knew she had to get that remote back before Jamie's parents got home, or else she'd lose a lot more than just one night's paycheck.
