The house seems vacant as it is mid-day. A thought to check the fields where the Backster's might be working. Walking up to the tall corn field the idea of walking in seven foot high corn is foolish.
I walked back to the barnyard. Looking around I call for anyone who might be in earshot. After several tries, no answer I thought to investigate the barn a little more.
As I entered the sound of clanging metal plows blades and shovels fill the barn as if they were wind chimes. I see hay stored in the loft and also many bales in box stalls. A floor hatch suggest's I go to the base floor and look around.
The steps are made of two inch thick oak timber. The pillars which hold the barn in place are huge and rough shorn. Straw and cow pies cover the floor. To one side is three stalls. The light is dim but I note that each stall is 10x10 feet and is draped with black thin cloth. Each has a gate with a removeable name plate. A big pencil hangs on a string from the ceiling and I see blank name plates too.
I look inside the stall and see a small wood stool and a bucket of water. The stall seems very fresh and cool. This seems to be a quiet cool place to rest out of the summer sun till the Backster's return.
Foolishly I step out and take a name plate and the big pencil. I write my name on it and put it in the slot on the gate. I closed the gate behind me and pulled the drape over the gate.
Suddenly the room was full of bright yellow light. So bright that all I could do was squint. The light got brighter with each passing moment, while the room went from cool to plain cold.
Shivering I went and sat on the stool in the corner and waited to see what happened. "Dumb, now that I think about it!" I should have left the barn at the first sign of anything strange.
As the air got colder my clothes felt hotter. Soon I was sweating as my nose was in a freeze zone. I reached my hands and arms up as to block the light, only to feel a shocking feeling knock me to the floor.
I opened my eyes slowly. The yellow light was now gone and the stall had just very dim light. On the floor in a fetal position I was naked.
A thirst like none I had ever known drew me to drink from the bucket. A taste of nothing like I'd ever drank, yet it quenched my thirst. I felt tired and lay down to doze off.
My head popped up to the sound of someone coming in the stall. I looked up in a daze, my mind felt drugged. He made no sound, touching my face his hands stroked my nose. In one hand he produced a brass ring and in a second pierced my nose with it.
I jerked back in pain and at the same time feel back to sleep. My mind had strange dreams. All the dreams I could remember in detail as if they were a real part of my life.
The yellow light returned and again I felt warm and comfortable. Cool air and bright warmth seemed so right.
Finally I sat up and looked around. My nose hurt like Hell.
