The hallway turns and stops and a thick door with a small window. David peeks through and on the other side, the hallway opens up to a catwalk that circles the entire corral area. “We need to be quiet,” whispers David as he opens to door, but as he does, the deafening sound of brays dampens any sound they could ever make. They creep along the catwalk and occasionally look upon the herds of boys turned donkey, some of which are being loaded in to crates. Ben looks down to one of the corrals and is totally taken back by a sight.
One of the corrals is filled with people only partially changed. “Look at this, David, some boys who are like us.” Then one of the guards approaches the corral, the boys all scurry to one corner as the guard holds a partially changed boy by his shirt. Suddenly, the boy drops his legs out from under him and slides out of his shirt. Ben and David then realize that it isn’t a boy at all, it’s a girl, they all are. Her bra covers her chest, but a long dark mane of hair goes down her back. Ben and David watch her run with anxiety, but they dare not yell to warn her as she turns a corner and is clotheslined by another guard.
The girl falls to her back and gasps, her eyes welled up with tears as two guards pick her up and heave her into the corral with the other girls. The guards just laugh as the other girls try and comfort her. “Always a handful of them get through,” one guard says, “those screeners don’t ever pay attention, do they. And now these girls have a long way to go.” The guard leans in toward the corral. “You see ladies, it takes a lot longer for girls to change, but they can make asses out of themselves with enough time.”
The guards walk away laughing as the girls weep and recoil at the sight of their changing features. David looks to Ben, “we have to help them.” Ben shakes his head. “Them, we can’t even help ourselves. Let’s just get out of here and we can bring help back.” David just looks at him, and knows he’s right, “it just doesn’t feel right.”
Ben grabs his tail and presents it to David, “Does this feel right, this thing behind you’re a… aa… aaaww HEE HAW.” Ben put his hands to his mouth, shaking his head as if trying to convince David that it didn’t just happen, but it did. Ben pulls his hands away from his face, “you can stay if you want, but I’ve got to get out of here.” Ben then turns and runs.
