Jackie and Jack'O'Lantern, formerly Carrie and John, cavorted and caroused down leaf-covered streets. Their laughter and glee filled the night with a brightness like a gossamer candle. As they passed groups of trick-or-treaters, they elicited smiles and waves.
Jack and Jackie lost themselves to the night, letting all that could hear know and feel a glimmer of merriment. There was no dreary or depression around them. They were the opposite of such things as werewolves, afraid of the moon, or vampires who tired of the eternal thirst for blood. And the loved it.
The two, vine arm in vine arm, walked with a spring in their step down a dark dirt road. They'd left behind the village and homes became more spread out as they came into the country. A pastoral feeling came upon them as they breathed in the fresh country air. They slowed, enjoying the night in silence now.
Jack was the first to spot it. Out of the corner of his eye the unmistakable shape and color of pumpkins. Jack pulled Jackie ahead toward them. Jackie saw them too and quickened her pace. They came to a field, surrounded by a rickety wooden fence, in which grew a thick pumpkin patch. Large pumpkins, the size of beachballs and sheltered by plate-wide green leaves, soaked up the moonlight in their leisure, and grew fat.
Jack and Jackie climbed over the fence and walked softly through the pumpkin patch. They brushed the skin of pumpkins as they walked by. It felt wonderful being among these orange orbs. It felt like home.
