The Magic Shop

Reconsidering

added 15 years ago O

That night, Tricia had trouble getting to sleep. She threw off her bedsheets after feeling too hot, assuming her fur would be enough to keep her warm. Then it was odd just feeling the mattress rub against her fur whenever she moved even the slightest inch. She stabbed the headboard with her horns several times before conceding to scoot her pillow away from it by a few inches. She couldn't sleep on her sides without one of her large ears feeling compressed, and even sleeping on her back was slightly uncomfortable due to her tail.

She didn't want to admit defeat, however. She didn't want to use the remote to turn her back to normal. She wanted this to be "normal" now. The only living cowgirl in the universe. She finally felt unique.

Her red hair spread across the mattress as she curled up on her side and once again tried to close off her mind do everything. Eventually she dipped into the realm of sleep, but only dreamed of waking up to find the remote had turned into a regular TV remote. No matter what buttons she pressed, she couldn't change her cow appearance. The television across the room kept flickering between channels as she frantically pounded several buttons at a time with her huge fingers. Each brief image showed her people she'd never seen before just staring at her, the expressions a mixture of confusion and disgust. Then the television flickered to images of her family, disappointed and shamed.

Tricia's eyes opened. The morning sun was creeping in from the blinds. She felt terrible, mentally and physically. Her back ached from an unusual sleeping position and her mind couldn't shake the images she had dreamed about. In panic, she snatched the remote off her bed-side table and activated the menu. The screen blinked on and she let out a sigh of relief. Just to test it, she pointed it at her mirror and zapped herself. The nose ring she was wearing yesterday reappeared on her nose with a pinching sensation. She pressed the button again and it disappeared.

She looked at herself. A black-furred anomaly of nature, naked and terrified of being stuck in a body she thought she wanted forever. It seemed using the remote to force people to accept her wasn't enough. It wasn't natural, just as she was no longer natural. Was she just using the remote to live a fantasy because she wanted a place to hide? Some way out of her boring life? But her life wasn't much different. She was the only one different. (And Rick, but she didn't feel like paying him any mind at the moment.)

Maybe it was time for a bigger change...
