I was a little surprised to find that I was, at first glance, normal. I wasn't any different than I was the day before, but strangely I felt different.
I went up to my room and tried to figure this out. It wasn't long before new memories started popping up in my head. In my haste, I'd apparently changed the world in ways I hadn't intended, and bizzare ones at that!
The reason I didn't feel right is because I was about to go though my transition, as would be almost anyone my age. Exactly when it happened was random, usually once or twice a year, and it was preceded by what I was feeling now.
Children here were born whatever their mothers were, either human or lion. They had the same intelligence, in fact, but the lions lacked the ability to manipulate objects and to speak. During a transition, everything changed. It didn't matter what you were before, human or lion, male or female, you could end up anything. Some stayed the way they were, others turned into the opposite species and gender. After that, it was set.
I laid on my bed and wondered: What was I going to be when I woke up? And if I didn't like it, could I simply change myself into something else?
