I bowed to her and said, "Beg your pardon, but my life there is rich with friends, ask to live there as a friend."
Her face told of anger and hatered, "Go threw the mirror and become a friend to someone. Live the life of lust and know death as someone's best f r i e n d!
Turning I stepped back threw the rose glass and into the present.
Instead meeting the girl I left behind, my first step was into a mound of straw and a rough cut wooden barn. I stood very still, I listened for any sound. I felt at ease with my self for making the right choice. I pressed my face against the barn door as to peek out.
Horses tied to rail fences, men walking around in dusty clothing. The breeze dry and dusty. The sun's warmth like an open hearth, as I felt warm and sweaty.
Men talked and women walked with them about all in western dress. This was not the place I lived, it looked as if in the long gone past.
"HEY HE'S OUT, SOMEONE GET A ROPE! WOMEN AND CHILDREN OFF THE STREET!"
All the men looked at me. Some with fear in their eyes and others with the look of objective thoughts.
I stepped back into the confines of the cool dark barn. What to do, where to hide. I looked, but then the barn doors swung open as several lasso's wrung my neck.
I pulled back and twisted, shaking my head I snorted in anger. No sooner did the snort sound ring in my ears that I understood the sprunned woman's words. " Go and be someone's friend."
I stopped the struggle and stood very quiet. A sharp poke in the butt and a yell from one man sent me into the wooden stall I came here from. I snuffed the air which gave meaning to my thoughts. I snorted and men laughed.
"Good we got him in here or we might not have our July fourth ox roast."
