Contemplating Armageddon

added 15 years ago O

Endless chaos waits just beyond your doorstep, only the thin walls of your home separating you from a fate that may very well be worse than death itself. You have to wonder, as you sit alone in your safe haven while everyone else you know is surely consumed by the horrors outside, what terrible deity you could have pissed off so badly that he'd bring such a strange, impossible wrath upon you, what you possibly could have done to deserve a complete and total breech of reality as your apparent end. Even more, you think on your loved ones; are they amongst the luckiest, those who managed to escape that flood? Are they some of the less fortunate, but still sane... or will any reunion with them that you could hope for be a meeting with snarling beasts? For the sake of your own sanity, you end this line of thought - the total irrationality of your situation has already stressed you enough, without spending the time you have left worrying about the rest of the world.

Left with no alternatives, you decide to do what you always do when you want to get your mind off the world around you: watch it through a television screen. You turn on your TV and flick to the nearest news channel. Nothing but static. You try another. More static. Another. The same. Every channel a chorus of white noise. Maybe you'll get better luck with the internet? You rush to your computer, only to find the connection dead. Soon, the lights in the house begin to flicker and go out as well, your power cut off, stealing away whatever else you might consider trying. Those bastard bugs have left you with nothing but the little food you have that won't spoil without refrigeration, only providing you with the means to live out the basest and most unsatisfying of lives until you die of starvation. To hell with that! Even fighting against the unstoppable forces at work is better than biding your time while you wait for death!

Carefully stepping out your door, you find the previously frenetic streets completely calm and empty, only the eerie luminescence of twilight filling the emptiness and not even a single bird's song piercing the silence.
