Julie was in luck. There was a brief magic flash, and suddenly someone altogether different was laying on top of her.
The person Kenan had become was a little girl of about five years old, with long golden hair and bright blue eyes, but she wasn't human. She was a harpy, with wings instead of arms, birdlike legs, and a feathered tail - her feathers were soft white, complementing her hair beautifully. Kenan the harpy-girl lay there stunned for a moment, in which time Julie sat up, waved the wand twice more, and snapped it over her knee.
"Wh-what h-happened?" Kenan asked, her voice quavering. Julie folded her arms across her chest, doing her best to give the little girl a stern look despite the wave of relief that was washing over her at the moment.
"I put an end to your schemes," she said. "And since you stuck me in a different body forever, I thought it was only fair that I do the same to you."
Kenan was panicking. "My magic!" she wailed. "It's all gone! All gone!"
Julie nodded. "Every last bit of it, I saw to that. You're just lucky I didn't make you obey my commands like you did to me."
The mention of commands made Kenan brighten. "I command you to find a way to change me back!" she shouted.
Julie smiled. "Sorry, I made sure that when I transformed you, it made you count as a different person for the purposes of your obedience spell. Even your reptile anthros don't have to obey you any more. They're free now, and peaceful; they won't be anybody's armies but their own ever again. I turned that poor fellow who stood against you back to normal, too. As for you, you're a normal five-year-old harpy girl, except that you remember who you used to be. I also set things up so that you have to act your physical age after today. I guess I'll be raising you as my daughter, since I can't very well leave you on your own like this. I'm calling you Katrina from now on; Kenan was a stupid name even when you were a guy. Now come on, we've got to get out of here before some would-be assassin comes up here and finds us."
Despite Katrina's protests, Julie scooped her up in her arms and leapt out the tower window, her wings lifting the two high into the skies. There was probably no way for them to return home, she knew, but being stuck in this strange new world was better than having that wand within Katrina's reach. Raising a daughter, as a mother, was an even stranger prospect, but Julie wasn't about to leave a now-helpless little girl on her own, and maybe she could help Katrina grow up into a better person than Cody had been. It would be one strange experience after another for Julie and her adopted daughter, but they'd manage.
Somehow.
