You wait for what seems like an eternity. You desperately hope that things go well for Lily. She's such a sweet, good-natured girl that you wouldn't want anything to happen to her... The door to the cell suddenly swings open. You jump up expecting to see Lily, but instead one of the employees walks in with a clipboard. For a moment you almost panic. "What happened? Is she - is everything okay?"
"Yes, everything's fine," she quickly responds. "We just have a few questions for you. First, you say that Lillian used to be Dr. Anderson, but became like she is now after an accident?"
"Yes, Anderson was testing the antidote, but it failed and did this."
"And you're positive that she has no recollection of being Dr. Anderson?"
"No," you laugh, thinking about the backup DVD, "I'm absolutely sure about that."
"Any particular reason?" She looks at you questioningly.
"Well, she destroyed the DVD with the only documentation on the working nanobots that could change us back, something that Dr. Anderson wouldn't possibly do."
"I'd say that's solid proof." She makes a few notes on the clipboard. "Now a few more questions. Jeanette says you used to be male?"
"That's right."
"Hmm... This makes things a bit difficult. You see, in order for Lillian to have a legal identity without being automatically placed in an orphanage, she needs to have a legal mother or father, either biological or adoptive, doesn't matter which. In this - ahem - unique case, the higher-ups have decided that said mother has to be the same species."
The statement hits you like a sledgehammer. You have to legally become a mother? You stand, speechless, and just stare at her.
"I'm sorry, it's the way things work. It's only temporary, though; we'll make sure everything's back how it should be when we get you all back to normal."
You think for a second. What do you have to lose? Most importantly, what does Lily have to lose? You quickly come to realize that you have to do it for Lily's sake. "Okay, I'll do it."
"Just sign here, then. Everything else is all in order." You take the pen she's holding and sign on the line. It feels as if your masculinity is leaving you like the ink leaving the pen. Before you even realize you've done it, she takes the pen and puts it in her pocket. "It'll be just a few minutes; Alex has already confirmed your identity because she saw you change, so you're free to go as soon as Lillian comes back."
You nod your head. "Thanks."
As she walks out, you wonder just how you got into this mess.
