The girls all turned to look at Bets--April's face was hardening into solid accusation, while Chastity and Diane were following suit.
It would have been easy, maybe, to back down. All she would have to do would be to lie, and pretend not to care. Maybe she would let people realize what had happened to Eric, and let people realize there was a cow trampling over Melanie's clothes.
It wouldn't be hard. Eric would be humiliated and a freak, not her. Melanie would be taken off to a farm somewhere, or a slaughterhouse, not her.
The long, lowing moo that Melanie made--and response from the classrooms--made the other girls laugh. And Bets just felt sicker and more twisted up inside.
"Yeah," she said, "I did. Don't you think this is going a little bit too far?"
