... a fairly plain wooden mask. It's simple, shaped like a human face, with holes for the eyes and mouth and an indentation for the nose to fit into. The wood looks quite old, as though the mask is an antique. There's a slight greenish tinge to the wood, as though moss grew on it at one point, but was scraped off badly.
You continue looking over the front of the mask, admiring the attention to detail - it's a simple mask, yet subtly, it's a masterpiece. The shape of the eye slots looks extremely natural, the colouration of the wood varies to give a hint of the natural contours of a face, even though the mask is actually very basic in shape. The mask even curves slightly differently where the base of the ears would be found, so that the mask looks surprisingly realistic in spite of its bland physical shape.
Turning the mask over, you are surprised to see the light of the room reflecting oddly along it. You rotate the mask back and forth a few times, almost entranced by the effect. Without even thinking, you start to raise the mask to your face...
But before you're even close to putting it on, the phone rings. Startled out of your daze, you put the mask down, and answer the phone. It happens to be your friend, Eleanor, inviting you out for lunch tomorrow.
