The fog was the least of their worries, they realized, but the crew found themselves a nice location on a hilltop upwind of the event. They moved in quickly and decisively, securing a base of operations inside the fogbank. Arnquist was torn between thinking it was too easy and thanking God for their good fortune thus far.
"Okay, here's the deal. I want this perimeter hardened, including electrifying the concertina wire and a manned watch on the .50 machine guns. Set claymore traps. If anything with fur tries to breach the line, kill it. Also, we are the front line. We are in the hot zone. We do not know what kind of contagion we are dealing with here. We could either be prey or new victims. What we do know from the transmission is that those infected turn into these werewolf creatures. Furthermore, infected men seem to turn female. We are going to be in the thick, but so far we know that we still have radio and satlink."
Arnquist kept glancing out at the campus. "Rounds are loaded on the tracer principle. Keep your guns set to burst mode, every third will be silver. If the myths are true they'll be lethal. If not, the fifties and the miniguns will shred 'em down...."
"Sir!" The radio operator said, looking up from a stack of hardware that was beyond the common base station rig. "I think we have a distress call!"
"Location?"
"They say they're pinned down in some maintenance passages. The signal is pretty degraded, they must be trying to transmit from underground."
Arnquist sighed relief and thanked the eggheads at the Pentagon for coming up with the advanced mil-spec signal procesing. "Do we have blueprints of that location?"
"Sir, yes sir!"
Arnquist thought carefully. Live people could give them more intel on the situation. Intelligence and information was one thing they would need. Anything, anything at all...
"Lieutenant Colonel, get me five men. Full body armor, assault package, include tranq pistols. I want us all doused in olfactory deadener. We're going in for a search and rescue. If anything happens to me, you have command."
