With horror, Tom realized he was empty. He had only loaded a few shells into the
weapon earlier. As quickly and calmly as he could, he reached into his pocket to retrieve
more shells. But as he loaded them into the shotgun, the creature made a leap for him.
Tom braced himself for the attack. Rebecca fired twice at the beast as it leapt at Tom,
one of the shots blasting through part of the beast's skull, splattering a mess all over.
Tom was barely able to step aside as the corpse of the beast landed nearby.
"Good shot, kid."
"Thanks." Rebecca said, smirking.
Their victory was brief, however, as Rebecca was tackled to the ground by one of the
other beasts they had assumed was dead. She cried out. Tom was taken by surprise, he
slipped on some of the brain matter across the floor, landing on his back. He sat back up,
and reached for his shotgun.
Tom grabbed the weapon, and pointed it at the beast. He hesitated to fire, he didn't
want the spreaded blast to hit Rebecca, though at that point a little buckshot was the least
of her worries. It was then Tom realized that something wasn't right. Rebecca was
struggling with the wolf, and winning.
She snarled at the wolf intensely, grasping his muzzle in one hand and an arm in the
other. She shook the beast around, punching it in the throat.
"Rebecca!!" He shouted.
As he watched on, fur grew up and down her arms and face. Her fingernails lengthened
and thickened. Her ears grew pointed and fuzzy, and her teeth grew sharp and wolf-like.
She was one of them!
Finally reaching up and biting the beast's throat, tearing a chunk of flesh out, Rebecca
kicked the beast in the chest, sending it several feet away. She spat out the animal flesh,
and climbed to her feet.
Tom stared on in disbelief. She looked at him. She was a werewolf, and yet she hadn't
become a giant beast. He pointed the weapon at her. Her attention turned to the other
wolf coming down the hallway, and she ran to meet the beast. The Rebecca wolf and the
beast slashed at each other, biting and snarling. Tom lowered his weapon.
The beast cut Rebecca across her side, she yelped in pain. Not taking a moment longer,
she grabbed the beast and flung it across the hall. When the beast recovered, it ran back
towards her. Brandishing her handgun once more, she nailed the beast in the forehead
with one shot. Dead.
She lowered the gun, and came back to Tom. "Are you okay?" She asked.
Tom didn't answer.
Rebecca offered him a hand. "Come on, we have to keep moving."
Tom took her hand, and stood back up. She had grown slightly, she was as tall as he was
now.
"Rebecca.." He stammered.
"Don't be afraid, I'm not an amateur like these guys." She says, waving a fur covered hand
at the bodies regressing into human form.
"I don't understand." Tom says, rubbing his temple.
"I wasn't born one, my parents aren't werewolves, though they know that I was infected.
I was bit by a werewolf when I was sixteen years old." She says. "Let's keep moving."
"Why is it that you're not a bloodthirsty animal like these?" Tom asks her.
"I don't know what's going on. Every werewolf I've ever met has always had complete
control over themselves when they change. These werewolves don't have any control,
they're animals. i don't understand it myself." Rebecca answers.
"So you're a werewolf."
Rebecca looks at her furry arms. "It looks that way."
"But you didn't change under the full moon?"
"I don't have to. We can learn to control and suppress the call of the moon. But that's
the one thing that's been bugging me since I found out about these werewolves. Tonight
is the first full moon of the month, and these guys show up."
Tom shakes his head. "So, what? Is this some new kind of werewolf?"
"I don't think so. I can smell them, they're just like us. I think that maybe the werewolf
that started this chain reaction of transformations was transformed by some other means.
But I just don't know."
