Marcia Caldwell: Paranormal Private Investigator

The Curse of Atwell Mansion - Arrival

added by Wolfy 15 years ago O

Marcia and Rusty sat inside the solid black BMW, right outside of the iron gates and fence that enclosed the building from the rest of the outside world. With the car idling, sitting and waiting for it's next command from Rusty, Marcia and Rusty looked at each other for a single and short moment. In that moment, they could both tell that the other was extremely excited. Neither of them had been on a case this authentic for a long time. They both hoped that they would run into real paranormal activity instead of the all-too-common cheap parlor tricks or someone dressed in a cheap costume trying to be funny, trying to keep people from having what was rightfully theirs. The large and foreboding mansion loomed off in the distance, while black clouds billowed and hung overhead, adding to the dark atmosphere that the mansion drew into itself. As Rusty hit the power window button to automatically make the window descend completely into the recess of the car door, lightning flashed, almost blindingly so, over the mansion. Mere seconds later, there was a loud crack and a thunderous boom, which was so powerful that they could physically see the iron bars of the entire fencing and gate system reverberate slightly. Again, they looked at each other, but this time it was out of worry, not really being sure if this was a good idea or not. Rusty, still looking over toward Marcia, saw Marcia nod her head signaling Rusty to continue what he had intended on doing. Slowly, Rusty extended his left hand and forearm outside the car window, extending his index finger to push the white call button on the otherwise completely black intercom speaker box.

Moments later, with Rusty's appendages safely in the vehicle, there was an answer from the intercom. The voice was soft and feminine, which Marcia immediately recognized to be Christines'.

"Hello... who is there?"

Leaning outside of the window slightly, Rusty held the button to speak, answering Christine. "This is Rusty, Marcia's assistant and we are here to investigate as per your request."

Oh yes! I remember, I have been expecting you for sometime. Once the gates open, please drive all the way up to the front door and I will meet you there."

Rusty looked back over to Marcia as the gates slowly opened while shrugging his shoulders. "Sounds easy enough." Marcia just replied with a solemn and silent nod.

Disengaging the park and putting the automatic transmission into drive, the car lurched forward, quickly and suddenly. Putting his foot to the pedal, the car slowly crept up along the long drive. As the cleared the gates, they could hear the gates slowly creaking shut, with an even louder crash when the metal pieces interlocked once more. Suddenly there was another loud crack, the thunder boomed even louder as a lightning bolt struck a few inches ahead of them, putting a large and smoldering crater in the black asphalt drive. Both Rusty and Marcia found themselves to be lucky as that was very close, too close for comfort even. Marcia and Rusty knew they had struck pay-dirt as something did not want them to enter the house, or it was something that was warning them to stay away. Either way, both wanted to continue on, being that this was an investigation of a lifetime and nothing would keep either of them from it.

Pulling up to the front door, the looked up in awe at the mammoth, rust colored, iron ore double doors. To Marcia and Rusty, the size of the house alone was larger than life. When Rusty parked the car and the two stepped out, a large and wide beam of light enveloped them. Looking up, they saw Christine Atwell standing there at the open door, ready and able to greet them with a large and wide smile on her face. Marcia and Rusty smiled back, figuring that she was happy that they might be able to put an end to her dealings with the ever-increasing amount of paranormal activity. As Marcia and Rusty ascended the large and solid white limestone steps, they noticed a Scottish Moore inscribed into one of the stones that made up the exterior wall. It really was a short and sweet read, which was unusual since they were typically lengthy reads, which read:

Eyes of new and eyes of old,

Be very quick and vastly bold,

When light fades and darkness unfolds,

Frightening sights will be there for you to behold

Curious about the inscription, Marcia scratched her head while looking right at Christine. "Did you read that aloud last full moon by chance?"

"Why yes I did, come to think of it... why do you ask?"

"Well, what you read aloud was an incantation to open a doorway between this world and one where things go bump-in-the-night roam."

"Oh my! Well that would explain somethings. I'll tell you Marcia... I came back to the mansion when the light from the full moon was quite bright and illuminating the inscription, which I had never paid attention to prior. I couldn't help myself but to read it as the single stone sparkled and glimmered from the radiant moonlight."

"Yes I understand completely, as that is no ordinary limestone. It is very rare, but it is moon limestone. Basically it is a broken off chunk of the moon itself that survived the entry into the Earth's atmosphere. It is no matter, as I know we now have some work on our hands!"

"Is there anything you can do to fix the mistake I made?" Christine asked worriedly.

"Yes... there is, but Rusty and I will have to stay the night, since tomorrow is the first night of the full moon."

"Why can't anything be done tonight?"

"You opened the portal between our worlds during a full moon, so the portal will only show itself during a night with the full moon, as that is when the connection between our worlds is the strongest. Not to mention, we will need the energy from the full moon in order to close the portal completely."

"So if we don't get the job done in the next few nights... I am going to be stuck with the same stuff till this time next month?"

Marcia sighed with her entire body, placing her right hand on Christine's left shoulder to console her while telling her the plain and simple truth. "Yes, I am afraid so."

Christine's head hung low for only a second and when she brought it back to it's normal position, Christine stuck out her open hand and forearm in a gesture as if to say Come on in. Marcia and Rusty did not want to stay outside of the large building much longer, so her welcoming gesture was much appreciated. Once they were inside, Marcia and Rusty were...
