You're surprised that you don't know of all the animals on the list. Lemur, for example, feels like you knew about the animal at one time, but now your child-like mind can't remember. Others, like cat, dog, and fox, are still ones you know easily.
You also see "skunk" on the list, and you stick out your tongue in disgust. "Eeew," you say in your little girl voice. "Why wud anybuddy wanna be a stinky skunk?"
You finish clasping the collar around your neck, and you feel a tingle there. It slowly spreads to the rest of your body.
Fur begins to crop up all over your skin. You scratch your arms feverishly, but it doesn't stop or feel any better. You watch yourself in the mirror as you're covered completely in fur. It's black in most places, except on your hands and feet, and around your nose, eyes and mouth. The front of your neck is white, too, and you pull the collar of your pink tee-shirt out to see your chest is also white.
Your hair begins to lighten as it grows from your head. It puffs out a little, gaining body, and eventually turns snow white. It stops halfway down your back.
A tugging in your rear tells you something is growing there. You turn your back to the mirror, and you can see a little black puff of hair poking out of a hole tailored into the seat of your overalls. This puff rapidly grows and unfurls itself into an enormous black tail with two white stripes. It flattens out and curls a little towards the top. You recognize what kind of tail it is instantly.
"No!" you shout at the mirror. "I didn't wanna be a skunk!"
You grab the tail and try futilely to shove it back into the hole it grew out of. You're surprised that you can feel the tail feeling your hands. The fur is also soft, but itchy. You giggle at the tickling your hand's motions are creating. Instead of fighting it, you start to rub it, patting down the fur. It feels great. "I wunder if this is what dogs feel when they get petted."
You look yourself over. Your big feet have pads on the bottoms. They're too large for shoes, but you get the feeling you won't be needing any. Your hands have tiny claws, and only four fingers instead of five. You have a little black button nose that sticks out in a tiny muzzle on your face. Your ears have grown big, round and black, and they stick out of your fluffy white hair.
"This isn't too bad," you say to yourself. "I look pwetty cute." You sniff the air. Your new nose picks up a lot of new and different smells, but nothing close to a skunk's spray. Maybe you won't have to worry about the bad smell after all.
You look back at the directions on the paper, but they make even less sense to you now. You try to read the heading at the top again.
"Weed... all... ins... ins... something... befff...for... before... pro... pro..." You give up. You remember that these are directions to the costume, but its exact words are too hard to pronounce. You don't really need them, anyway. There's only one thing left in the plastic bag; two pink scrunchies.
You have a good idea what these are for. Carefully, you gather half of your hair into a bunch and slip it through a scrunchy. You do the same with the other half. Now you're wearing your hair in two adorable white pigtails. Your muzzle twists into a smile.
"Awesum!" you exclaim. You look down at your older girl clothes, and at your older boy clothes. They look boring. You bet you can have a lot more fun as a little skunk girl. You look inside the backpack and see some coloring books, a couple of toys, and stuff to write and color with. You take the wallet from your original pants, then stuff your boy clothes in the backpack. Hoisting the pack over your shoulders, you bound out the door with wallet and voucher book in hand, ready to pay for your costume and explore more of the mall.
