I heard the sheets behind me being pulled back, and decided to steal a glance at Caroline to confirm that she too was dressed. She was rubbing her temples as she sat up. I blinked, she was dressed, but it wasn't what she'd been wearing when I picked her up in my Camry.
Caroline must've noticed too because she jumped up and ran her fingers over her sequined costume. It looked like a circus trapeze artist or magician's assistant's outfit. I didn't say anything pretending I hadn't noticed. I stopped taken aback as I entered the bathroom. The mirror facing the door reflected my tuxedo, but my head wasn't mine. It belonged to a giant white rabbit. I reached up and ran ran my fingers over my 18 inch long floppy white ears. They felt furry and silky to my touch, but the weirdest part was how my fingers felt touching my ears. I opened my mouth with an annoyingly large overbite, after all all those years of orthodontia I was most peeved about the teeth.
I closed my eyes and wished that it was all a dream, and then I opened my eyes again. I was still a rabbit, or at least I had a rabbit's head. I wasn't sure about the rest of me. My hands were furry on top with pink palms, but they weren't really rabbit paws, but they weren't human either. I still had thumbs. I fumbled with the buttons and cumberbund to reveal a furry abdomen. I slammed the bathroom door open and shouted at Caroline.
"Why didn't you say I was a rabbit? How did you do this to me?"
"Me? I thought I was dreaming. You didn't dress me in this freaky costume?" she accused right back. Then she whispered, "You're really a rabbit?"
"Yes, I'm furry under my tux too," I answered angrily.
"Dave's top hat!" she screamed.
I remembered, Dave had been acting out after winning the title of Prom King. He had doffed his top hat and put it on my head, as he said, "Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat."
We'd all laughed 'cause my last name is O'Hare - yes, like the airport, but no relation that I know of, in case you were about to ask.
Then he'd waved the hat over Caroline as he introduced her as his lovely assistant, and asked her to go put the "rabbit" to bed.
Both our eyes widened and we nodded. We had to find Dave and his top hat. Somehow he or it had done this to us.
