The electric feeling arced through by body and this time it was the worst of all. I don't really understand it, but at some point I must have blacked out.
----
I was back at the prom, dancing to a slow song with Caroline. Everything shifted and I was dancing still with Caroline, but this time we are dancing to a really crazy dance beat. At some point in the song, someone put a top-hat on my head.
Another shift and Caroline and I are dancing to another slow song. Caroline whispers to be, "Do you ever wish you could do it all over again?"
I look at her and then ask, "Do what all over again?"
Caroline leans in closer and whispers to me, "School. Do you wish you could do it over and maybe make some changes?"
I think for a minute and then breathing in the scent of her perfume, I tell her, "Yes. But if I did it all over again, I would not hide my intelligence. I would recognize it and use it. Hell, maybe even use it for the betterment of human kind."
Caroline grins at this and doesn't say anything. Everything shifts and a loud techno dance song is blaring. I'm still wearing the top-hat and am now over by the punch bowl. I'm a approached by an older man whom I don't recognize as any of the teachers.
He helps himself to the punch and as he stands there drinking, he leans over and asks, "Did you mean everything you said before. About school and your intelligence."
I look over at him, curious. Finally I say, "Yes, but there is no way that can happen. It's like saying, 'I wish to be a four year old girl that will one day become Caroline's lesbian girlfriend'. Wishes don't come true. Tried it once. Wished for my family to be rich. Didn't work."
I'm about to set my punch down and go look for Caroline when the man grabs me by the arm. Looking at me, he says, "All that you just wished can come true, if you make a promise."
I look at him sceptically and ask, "What promise."
The man picks up his drinks, sips at it and then says, "You can become all of that, if you promise to use your intelligence for the better of mankind. If you break this promise, misfortune will follow."
Bothered by all this, not sure what he's talking about, I hastily reply, "Yeah. I do wish all those wishes would come true. By the by, I already said I would use my intelligence for the betterment of humankind. So no worries there." With this said, I take of the top-hat and set it on his head.
He just nods and tells me, "It is done."
I'm unsure of what just happened, but the old man finishes his punch, sets the cup down and walks back into the crowd. I don't see him again for the whole night.
----
I wake up, confused about the dream. I lay there a minute and finally the pressure on my bladder forces me to get up.
Pushing aside the Hello Kitty sheets and comforter, I slide out of bed. Running out of my room, the thought 'Mommy will be proud I didn't wet the bed', chasing about in my mind as I head for the bathroom.
After I'm done, I head downstairs to see if mommy has breakfast ready. Maybe mommy will let me invite Caroline, the girl I met in Head start, over today. For me, I'm just a happy, intelligent four year old girl from a family that is moderately weathy.
The End(?)
