When Tricia led Samantha into her apartment, they were both surprised to discover the place had been altered significantly. Tricia glimpsed several items of furniture and decoration that were supposed to be in Sam's place, and some of her own stuff was missing.
"What the hell?" Sam said aloud. She walked around the living room space, looking all around. "It's like a combination of our apartments!"
Tricia knew at once what had caused it, but she tried to think why. She examined the remote and went through a series of menus to find a "domestic" category.
"Look at this!" she heard her friend shout from another room. Trish followed the sound, thinking Sam was in her bedroom, but when she arrived, it was empty. And also thankfully unchanged.
"In here!" Sam called behind her. Trish went back into the short hallway leading from the living room and saw a doorway that was never there before. Going inside, she found herself in a perfect replica of Sam's room from her own apartment.
"I'm freaking out, Trish," the skunk girl said. "What did that thing do to our apartments? Do I even still have one?"
"I'm trying to figure that out," Trish said, returning her attention to the remote. "There's so many options and stuff it's really hard to figure out what it's changed. It's easy with you and me because we could scan our original forms in...but I never touched any settings that should affect anything besides our bodies and clothes."
"Not true," Sam corrected. "You set it so that people would believe we were always skunks. What if it also changed reality so that we were always sisters?"
Of course, thought Tricia. That made sense, in a weird science kind of way. "So the remote must have decided it was more realistic for us to have an apartment together."
"Hey, us sisters have to stick together," Sam said playfully as she ruffled Trish's white and black-striped hair. "Now seriously, can we change this back?"
"Sure," Trish said. "If all we need to do is become human again and reset the remote."
"Okay, well..." Sam said. "I guess it's nothing to be worried about then. If it's only temporary."
"Our deal was 24 hours," Trish said. "Don't worry about anything being permanent. I have no intention of living my life as a skunk girl. There's plenty of other species to try out." She winked.
"Wow, look at this!" Sam moved to her dresser and grabbed a picture frame. "Remember that class trip to Six Flags?"
Trish looked at the picture. They had gone to Six Flags a few years ago, and this was a photo of their group with guys in Bugs Bunny and Pepe Le Pew costumes. The images of Trish and Sam, however, were of their skunk forms. Trish and Sam were hugging Pepe Le Pew, curling their tails around his.
"This is really freaky," she said. "We never hugged him."
"Yeah," Sam agreed. "I wonder what else changed."
"I'll guess our clothes did," Trish said as she moved to open Sam's closet. She plucked a pair of pants and showed Sam the seat. "Holes tailored into the backs."
Sam clutched the pants as if she'd never seen them before. "Woah."
Trish also noticed that many of her clothes were of slightly larger sizes, to fit Sam's bigger waistline. Since Sam wasn't made aware of her metabolism changes, though, she thought it best not to comment on that aspect.
Sam put the pants away. "So it looks like we're roommies. What kind of stuff do you want to do tonight?"
