Walk to a circus themed the same as a bunch of evil monsters you've seen tonight, walk into a dark and foreboding forest that looks like it could swallow you whole itself... or go check out a lake. Yeah, real tough choice.
It doesn't take you long to reach the river, and after you do you're ecstatic to see buildings on the other side. Squinting to try and make them out, you can just barely spot a handful of familiar landmarks you recognize - it's your town! Apparently, the hole didn't even take you that far, and all that it's left between you and your home is a relatively small lake. In fact, you could probably swim the length of it (and thanks to the fact that the forests surrounding it are virtually impassable, that's probably your only option).
Of course, nothing is that easy. No, it'd be far too convenient if you could just dive in and swim back. Instead, there just has to be a sign near the lake, and that sign just has to say "BEWARE OF LEECHES". Leeches. Because if there's nothing in this world that'll make you gag, they probably still will. But even with leech-infested waters, it's hardly a deterrent for you. You've gotten through far worse just tonight, and getting a couple of leeches off should be easy enough after escaping ravenous werewolves and outmaneuvering massive antmen. And besides, with your clothes on you should be fairly well-protected. Without another thought, you jump in, swimming away before some kind of rubber tree decides to leak sap on you or something.
You've already made it halfway across the lake, adrenaline helping to fuel you and your confidence doing the rest of the work, when you hear a sound in the water behind you. Turning, you see something just cresting on the surface, moving towards you like a slow torpedo. At first it just looks like an dark blur, but as it approaches it starts to speed up, dipping above the surface, and you get a better look at it. It looks like... a dolphin's tail? Odd but true, it seems that a disembodied black dolphin's tail is just swimming towards you. At least, that's what it looks like until you spot the front. At the tip quickly approaching you is a circular mouth filled with tons of tiny little teeth, open wide and ready to bite into you. This massive monstrosity isn't a tail, this is one of the leeches!
After leaving a warm spot in your wake, you turn and swim away as fast as you possibly can. Every few seconds you peek over your shoulder and see that freakish leech getting closer and closer, then turn back and see the shore getting nearer and nearer. You swim as hard as you can, but it's still gaining inch by inch, its mouth ready to clamp down on you at the first opportunity. You just need to get a little farther, onto the shore where it's safe... just a little more... just a little... and you make it!
You scramble onto the shore without a moment's hesitation, getting clear of the dangerous waters immediately. You then turn to the water triumphantly, as if to say "you threw your best at me, world, and I still hit a home run", and you smile contentedly at your success. This is it, it's over, you've won. You can finally go home and put this whole night behind you. Sighing, you turn around and start to make your way back to your humble abode... but you hear something dragging behind you. Turning around, you spot a thick, long dolphin's tail reaching down to where it just barely scrapes against the ground, and reaching up to where the leech has bitten you right above your ass.
