"Dang, Roger, that was the Veterinary School. One of their big dogs escaped again," Campus cop Cory said reholstering his walkie-talkie.
"We get to use our tasers?" Roger asked eagerly.
"Yeah, we get to use our tasers, Roger. It probably ran off through the underground tunnels."
I shook my head, arched my body, and suppressed my urge to howl. I managed to shove all my books and stuff into my back pack before my thumbs became dew claws. I couldn't exit out the front door, but I remembered that the old stacks go down to the basement, and from there I can get into the heating and utility tunnels, and then outside.
A shadow darted toward the door to the stacks, and disappeared in the ancient black metal stacks which contained the majority of the library's collecton. Large paws silently glided over the linoleum and on to the metal meshwork walkways. Periodically, a claw with strike the metal. A librarian and a couple students turned at the sound, but no one saw anything.
I sighed a relief as I exited through the cargo delivery access, and entered the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the campus. The corridors were silent, and they reeked of mold and mildew. I caught the scent of sweaty guys moving toward me. I heard the sound of an electrical spark, and could smell ozone. The footsteps echoed and I couldn't be sure whether they were coming from behind or front or perhaps down a side corridor. I paused to get my bearings. I heard a whistling sound and leapt. To steel needles pierced my torso, and my eight teats tensed as the electricity flowed through me.
I heard voices, my body ached all over. My furry underbelly rested on a wire mesh cage floor. It was so humiliating.
"Say, Core, think I can return this bag to the owner. Her purse is inside, and check out her ID photo."
I open my eyes about an eighth of an inch. I see my backpack sitting on a stool, and this overweight college boy holding my driver's licence for a taller older gangly guy to see.
"Yeah, if I was into girls, I guess I'd say she was hot. Sure you can return the bag to her. Maybe you'll get a reward," Cory said with a wink.
I growled lowly.
"Sounds like the bitch is waking up," Cory said.
"Well, she's not going anywhere else tonight. That's a titanium cage," Roger said.
"Wonder how it got out in the first place."
"Don't know. Don't care. Let's get going. She's the vet school's problem now."
"Say, why do you think the big dog swiped this back pack?"
"Probably, smelled food in it or something."
"But there wasn't any food in it," Roger protested.
"The girl probably brought her lunch ate it, but the smell lingered. She's just lucky that we got the dog, before she ripped open the bag.
