The Magic Shop

At Last, an Authority Figure, More or Less

added by Catfish 14 years ago O

"Is this the manager coming?" Lina asked, pointing off to her left.

Amy followed the point, and saw a perfectly ordinary-looking 40-something man coming down the aisle, dressed in a polo shirt and khakis, carrying what appeared to be a toolbox. But what made Amy say "oh, my God" was the fact that Grace was following him. She'd been transformed, though -- her legs cat-like, ending in actual paws, the fur yellowish with black leopard spots, a tail twitching behind her. Matching cat-shaped ears sat on top of her head, partially covered by her hair, silver rings and studs through the outer edges; the sides of her head, where her ears should have gone -- from where Lina and Amy's animal ears still emerged -- were bare.

Grace had leopard spots all over her body, including her face, and as she came closer, it became obvious that the ones above her hips were tattoos; there were hundreds of them.

Amy was staring at Grace's new look with her mouth open. Lina saw this, confused. The manager saw the mirror, and his eyebrows raised. "Where's the freakin'" -- he mumbled, then bent at the knees and leaned forward to pick a piece of paper up off the ground. "Do you know who was supposed to check these signs this morning?" he asked in Grace's direction, although without waiting for an answer, he stuck the sign to the face of the mirror.

"Reality Altering Mirror," it read in big print, and then below that it said "Warning" in white letters on a red background, and below that were smaller black letters: "Wishes and desires stated while looking into mirror will be granted in reality-altering fashion. We are not responsible for any changes to your life, or other lives, that may result. Please ask one of our magic experts for a consultation. Making second wish before first wish is granted may have unpredictable results."

"Oh, that must be what happened," said Lina. "You wished to be normal, I wished to look like a cheerleader, and it kind of combined both of those with what I looked like already."

"But Grace -- she was trying to help me earlier -- is different, too," pointed out Amy.

The manager, rooting around in the box he was carrying, looked up at Grace. Grace looked down at herself. "I am?" she asked. "I don't feel any different."

"She had human legs, and human ears," said Amy. "And no piercings or tattoos, and her clothes were more professional..." This was earning her blank stares from both Grace and the manager.

"Please tell me you're not saying catgirls are not human," said the manager. "Just because their ears are different --"

Amy's eyes went wide. "No! No, of course not. It's just -- things have changed for me and Lina -- look, I'm sure Grace told you what happened earlier with your magic ink, and then my friend Lina and I were here with this mirror, and it turned out the things we said were coming true..."
