It took quite the while filling out the details of information. I was surprised the info they asked about relatives both far away and local. The questions about their addresses and whether or not we would visit them on a regular basis. At long last I'd finished the forms and handing the clipboard to the receptionist, I was told to wait for an interview.
I was thrilled to say the least as the expected, normal statement about holding the application for thirty days and informing me if any opening might come up. Instead I was to get an interview today, the misses' will be very happy tonight!
A short stocky man stepped out into the waiting room and called my name. I was asked to follow him to an interview room and have a seat. The man asked me if I wanted a coffee or something to drink before he began. Not drinking coffee I oppt'ed for a bottled water instead.
"Good afternoon mister Adams, my name is Bane Fredericks and my duties are to judge your willingness to work here at P.I.F."
I smiled and sat attentive and listening to every word spoken.
"I see here that you only have basic high school education and no real skills in any farming background, am I correct?" he asked.
My heart sank as I answered, "yes!"
"No matter we have several possible employment positions. First and foremost is our special Scientific volunteer Endowment program! This offers employment under a contractual basis by which if you accept the employee is boarded while working out of town on any assignment. Most of the assigned positions are out of the country, but offer an extreme rate of pay. Most of these positions are on a ten and twenty year contract which includes a employee, spouse retirement package."
I was getting empressed by what was being offered. The misses would be very proud of me if I got us a solid long term income, let alone a retirement package as well.
"Mister Adams I see here that you noted a past employment working with horses and donkeys. If this would be of interest again I have this special contract offered by the "Coachman Services" inside the Park itself. The work details says hands on duties with donkeys used by the Park for pulling tourist coaches and maintenance wagons. Says here that you would live at the Park, but work week was seven days. No vacation time for the first two years and after that breakin time you would recieve four weeks vacation at one of the company owned resorts. Pay to be sent to spouse while living inside the Park! I see by this that if no children at home the spouse my also work with you and double the money you would need!"
I was about to agree when the receptionist burst in and handed the man some new job offers.
"My things are opening up today mister Adams! I have been given a contract to work at the Michigan division. We have a draft horse stud in upper Michigan which supplies Mackinaw Island Park with continued stock of strong horse flesh to work on the island year round. The offer says your wife and any children can go there too!"
I was about to say I'd choosen one when he began anew.
"Well we have a seven year contract for a management position as the director of breeding at the Pleasure Island Hog Farm. That farm supplies the Park and region with meat products, people got'a eat so the place is always busy!"
I was really hyped' at this point!
I have here a Scientific Study on breeding "Homo-Equineus" intelligent horses for use in the circus and on tours!"
"I have an opening for Pasture Management on the sheep and goat farm near Denver Colorado!"
"Here's another for a ten to retirement contract for work at the Mid - West Feed Lot, they are in need of a midmanagement associate to help in beef cattle breeding. Says here that the spouse can work along side her husband for additional personal enjoyment."
He had several more and soon I was baffled. I asked for some copies of the contracts in the seven to twenty year range so that I could talk it over with the wife.
As I drove toward home I thought of how proud thw wife would be working along side me at one of these jobs.
