After their weird experience with the machine, both girls were a little weirded out. They looked around the rest of the lab, but nothing else moved.
In the library upstairs, Katie found a book of 'Genome Templates', with pages showing people of different ages, genders and ethnicities. Even some bizarre animal-like things. Each page had a barcode along the edge. The label on the book said these were presets for the Trans-Form machine, but scanning them produced no more effect.
They kept the book, and headed home. Tiffany seemed to be getting slowly more emotional every time they spoke, and Katie even began to wonder if the experience had troubled her more than they thought.
Then, about a week and a half later, Tiffany was off school for a doctors appointment.
Katie came round in the evening, bringing copies of her homework, and found Tiffany curled up on her couch crying. Katie wasn't sure if this was her fault somehow, but either way she had to do something to help her friend.
"Tiff, what's wrong?" She comforted the tearful girl for a few minutes, reassuring her that she wouldn't think any less of her for being upset. Then, when Katie was almost prepared to give up, Tiffany sobbed a couple of words.
"I might be ... I ... I'm pregnant."
Katie's eyes widened in shock. She'd been pretty sure her friend hadn't been with a guy, and they talked about everything.
