Hanna stood at the window of her room in her grandmother's castle. She was looking over Sioux City, Iowa. Her grandmother had chosen this location because it was more of a central location than Washington D.C. had been. When D.C. was wiped out her grandmother had been able to rise up and lead the country with compassion and justice. Even though she was queen she sought advice from her subjects. Today was the anniversary day of her grandmother brought her throne from the mystical world to the new world that was created.
Hanna turned away from the window and looked in the mirror in her room. She was wearing a light blue gown that complimented her blue eyes and platinum blond hair which was pulled back into a braid. This of course showed off her long pointed ears. She was quarter elf after all. This also caused her to be shorter than what she had been as a human. As a human she had been five foot eight but now she was four foot five. She would have been shorter if she hadn't also been quarter human and half demon. She never brought up that she was half demon unless she trusted those she told. People still feared demons and they would surely call for her head if it had become widely known.
Closing her eyes she thought back to that fateful day when The Barrier had collapsed. She was male standing five foot eight with green eyes and brown hair at that time and her grandmother had been her friend. Her transformation on that day was painful. It had felt like her cells were on fire and boiling. A few people had told her that she had been glowing and they were afraid that she would die. Once the pain had subsided her sex and species had been changed.
She opened her eyes again and frowned. The last two years she had been hit on by several men wanting to go out with her. She figured that most of them were just looking to inherit the kingdom someday. Others didn't know just how old she was. She looked like she was twenty-five in human years but she was 147 which translated to about thirteen in human years. She wasn't looking forward to the ball. She was sure she'd have to politely fend off the new batch of suitors.
There was a knock on her door and she said "Enter!"
"Excuse me Princess" Alice said. Alice was Hanna's favorite out of the servants. "The ball will begin in an hour."
Hanna sighed and said "Thank you Alice."
"It's such a pity that you don't enjoy the balls" Alice said. "You had been looking forward to the first one and were so excited about it."
"Well the suitors put a damper on my excitement real quick" Hanna said.
"Oh never mind them" Alice said. "Those that approach you at the ball just want to be with you for the stature. They don't care about you otherwise."
"That's why I don't look forward to the balls anymore" Hanna said. "Most of the suitors have been human and wouldn't have even thought about being with me. There's still prejudice by humans toward those that are different from them. That's why the mystic world separated so long ago."
"There are some humans that see past the differences to the hearts of those we know" Alice said.
Hanna turned to Alice, smiled, and said "That's why I like you so much. You see past our differences. I just hope the rest of humanity will learn that."
"They will" Alice said making it sound like a promise. "They just need some time. I'll come get you when it's time for the ball."
"Thank you Alice" Hanna said.
Alice bowed out of Hanna's room and closed the door. Hanna turned back to the window and looked out. As she did she muttered to herself "At least humanity has learned to see past skin color, disabilities, and sex. They have something more different now to be prejudiced against."
