Deep into the forest, you find a sort of strange, rocky clearing. There's some trees, but it doesn't look like it was always naturally forest here, more like it overgrew an area that was once settled. You walk around the clearing, trying to find some definite sign of what this place is.. or was.....
...suddenly, with a loud CRACK the ground beneath your feet gives way and you fall underground, sliding down a slope of dirt and stone until you plummet bum-first down onto a rocky surface and come to a stop. Thoroughly dazed, you take a moment to catch your breath. Once you compose yourself, you look around your new surroundings. You seem to be in a large cave of some sort, it's so dark that you can barely see three feet away from the spot where the sun is shining in through your fresh new entrance. The hole you broke through is about forty feet above you, with the wall you slid down directly behind you. Thankfully it was slanted enough that you didn't fall straight down into this place or you're sure you would have been hurt, but it's still much steep to climb out.
You consider what to do now... yelling for help won't do any good, no one even knows where you went and there certainly wasn't anyone remotely nearby outside... but... knowing just sitting here won't do any good, you start to get up. You carefully test putting weight on each of your ankles and arms first to see if they're alright. Thankfully, they are, your rear end seemed to have taken the worst of it. Once you're satisfied that you can stand, you get up and pull out your cell phone. You try to phone a friend, but a strange garbled noise blares out before it even rings, you mustn't be able to get any reception down here... You cancel the call, since the garbled sound was actually a little creepy after hearing it echo, and go to put the phone away. But as you move it, you thought you saw it's backlight illuminate something in the darkness. Curiously, you hold the phone up and face it away from you using it as a flashlight..... and see three fierce faces stare at you through the darkness.
Caught totally off guard, you scream and leap back, dropping your phone. It falls to the feet of the figures and you get a better view of their legs now - they're statues! Their stony legs seem to be armoured, indicating they're some form of warrior or guard. You cautiously reach for your cellphone, half expecting them to jump to life and attack you.... but they continue staring straight ahead, motionless, oblivious to your presence. Using it as a flashlight once again, you get up and look around a bit more - gasping at the sight. They certainly weren't the only ones... To their sides stands another five or six statues, and behind them is another row of an equal amount. Behind them, yet another, and another, as far back as you're able to see. As near as you can tell, there must be over a hundred of them, all facing in your direction.
On closer look, the craftsmanship on them is amazing - each looks extremely lifelike, every proportion is correct and realistic, and every one of them was unique in their own way, some wore robes, others had armour, some had a special piece of jewelry or a longer beard... And every single one's face was different; though they all shared the same solemn stare. They were in various states of decay, some held up very well, while others were cracked and chipped all over, missing a limb or a weapon. A few weren't even recognizably human any more, they were no more than two stumps rooted to the floor with a bunch of rubble at their feet.
Why would someone make all these? Who COULD have made all these? You look back at where you fell in, the direction they all gazed towards. It's possible that was an entrance of some sort that they were guarding, but what would they be guarding? Or perhaps that slope you fell down was created as a result of a cave-in centuries past, burying a treasure or tomb the stone army was to protect - or keep sealed in.
You look back across the army. You haven't been able to stop shivering this entire time, but you're certainly not cold, or exactly frightened (anymore)... the feeling was something different, like you were on edge. Every moment out of the corner of your eye it looks as if one was coming to life, but hadn't moved on closer evaluation. And each one of your heart beats, each sound from outside, each echo in the cave, they all sounded like a footstep off in the distance.
Not sure what else to do, you sit down in a dark corner, out of sight from their gaze.
