Jennifer arrived at school without any more complications. The phone call from Kyle was already far from her mind by the time she got off the bus and began walking toward the school entrance.
As she approached, her sneakers started to feel funny. Every step she took became more uncomfortable. She looked down, slowing her pace. There was something weird on them. Something like black tar was almost completely covering them.
"Ew, gross!" she said. She walked over to a short concrete wall that ran along the side of the path to the front door. Sitting on it, she tried to remove her left shoe. It felt rubbery and hard to grip, not at all sticky like tar would be. Jennifer looked closer at it and realized that there wasn't anything actually covering her shoes...her shoes were becoming something else. Before her eyes her sneakers were losing definition, smoothing and flattening out. She tried to pull it off once again, but it was stuck on her feet. Then she realized her socks were darkening into the shiny black substance as well.
"Uh...uh...Help! Someone! Can someone help me please?" she called. Droves of students walked past her, not even glancing over to see who was shouting. Meanwhile, the black goo that was her sneakers and socks were starting to crawl up her legs. She knew she had no choice but to walk toward the crowd. She slowly put her weight back on her feet and stood up. It felt weird. She couldn't really even feel her feet anymore. They were even flatter and wider, and she was forced to waddle slowly so she wouldn't fall over.
"HELP! I NEED HELP!" Again, nobody paid her any mind. Everyone kept walking into the building.
Just before she reached the crowd of students, her legs gave out. She sprawled onto the pavement, able to avoid bruising herself, although her hands were scratched up a little. She looked down at her legs and was horrified to see them merging together. What used to be her feet joined at what used to be their heels, and she realized that whatever that black goo was, it was turning her legs into a fish tail like a mermaid.
"What the hell is happening to me?! Why isn't anyone helping me?!" Her screams fell on deaf or uncaring ears. She began to crawl with her arms toward the last of the students in the crowd, a boy she knew named Reed. She reached out and grabbed his ankle.
"Jennifer, let go!" the boy said gruffly as he shook himself free and kept walking. Jen looked after him, shocked that he didn't seem to care at all that she was turning into a freak in the middle of the courtyard.
Her body felt stranger still. The black substance continued crawling up her waist. It touched her preppy skirt and caused it to change into the slick, black goo as well. Her other clothes became infected as well, all of them darkening and deforming until Jennifer was covered, neck to tailfin, by a skin-tight black suit that seemed to be made of incredibly shiny, incredibly smooth latex. The only parts of her body that weren't covered were her head and most of her arms.
There was no zipper or fastener or anything she could use to remove the bodysuit...if that's what it truly was. The only three places there seemed to be an edge; on her neck, and her upper arms, she couldn't get her fingers between the suit and her skin. Her ample breasts were shaped quite distinctly by their form-fitting prison, though there was no impression of any nipples. Her crotch was gone, totally absorbed by the mermaid tail.
"What the hell is this thing?" she shouted to the now-empty courtyard. She heard the rumbling of engines and turned to watch the line of buses begin pulling away. "Why doesn't anyone HELP ME?!"
