Match Your Mate

added 14 years ago O

You look at the sign for the shop "Match Your Mate." You wonder what that means. It sounds more like a game show than a business. You enter the store, which is a large sterile room with white floors, walls, and ceiling. Daylight fluorescents line the office-like drop ceiling. Apart from a counter at the far end leading to a series of similar doors, the room is completely empty.

You cross the room and greet the distinguished gentleman at the counter. He looks in his forties and has just begun to lose his hair. He wears a black business suit with a white shirt and forest green tie.

"How may I help you match your mate, sir?" he asks you.

You ask him to tell you the purpose of this store. He explains that his business uses highly sophisticated computers and the most precise magic elements to create a perfect representation of anyone's ideal mate. None of what he says makes much sense to you, but the talk of meeting the ideal mate is something you have a hard time refusing. You ask about the cost of the service.

"We have several types of services," the man explains. "All very costly, but you'll surely agree that what we offer is worth any price." You nod, though disappointed. You're almost broke. There's no way you can afford this place.

"I notice you have a book of vouchers," the man says. "We are running a special this month on our Basic Mate Match service."

Now you're getting somewhere. You flip through the book eagerly until you find a voucher for Match Your Mate.

This coupon entitles the customer to one (1) complete Basic Mate Match procedure. Limit one coupon per customer. Humans and Humanoids only. Expires...

The fine print goes on for a while, but you've read all you need to read. You tear the voucher out of the book and hand it to the gentleman.

"Very good, sir," the man says. He begins typing on a computer, which is pure white like the rest of the room. "I will prepare Match Chamber One. You may enter when the doors open." He gestures to the row of doors, which are marked 1 through 5. "Inside there is a computer terminal where you will input all the data necessary to process your order. You will need to enter the data as accurately as possible...including the naughty items." He winks. "Don't worry, the information is totally confidential and secure. We have a username/password system. Even in the unlikely event a technician needs to access the database, no one will be able to link you to your personal data. Of course, you must remember your username and password or retrieval at a later date will be next to impossible.

It sounds complicated, but you realize the necessity. They will, after all, be creating or summoning an entire person based on the information you give them. That's probably a lot of work, even for the combined powers of science and magic.

The chamber door opens and you are motioned inside. You step in and hear the door shut and lock behind you.
