You notice another ring next to the Monster ring. This one is certainly of interest to you. On the face of the ring is a carving of a wolf's head, with two small sapphires set at the wolf's eyes. You pick up the ring box and take a closer look. The detailing is incredible and it appears to be the perfect size for you.
There is a sheet of paper folded and sitting in the top of the ring box. You pull it out and unfold it enough to read the top of the paper. It reads: The Werewolf Ring Instructions.
Could it be? Could this ring be magical and allow people to turn into a werewolf? You check the price on the sticker on the bottom of the box. $10? That's a steal for the chance to make one of your deepest desires come true. You snap the box closed and go directly to the register.
The cashier, a kindly older woman picks up the box and opens it. She looks at you and smiles.
"Ah yes, you're going to have fun with this," she says.
"I thought it might be good for a laugh," you reply.
"Or a howl," she replied. You look around, feeling a little silly for buying something like this but notice the store is empty, aside from the two of you. You find this encouraging, so you loosen up a little.
"Does this actually work?" you ask, still feeling a little silly.
"Oh yes, all my items work. This particular item is the Werewolf ring. Don't worry, it won't turn you into a blood thirsty beast. It only changes the outside, not what's inside," she says.
"How does it work?" you ask.
"Well, first off, you have to be wearing the ring to change. There is a spell inside on this sheet of paper that must be recited to activate the ring. The level you change depends on the cycle of the moon," she says.
"Cycle of the moon?" you ask.
"Yes, the point the moon is at in it's cycle determines how much you change. If it's in it's new moon stage, you'll get some fur, some claws and a little fang. Quarter moon, it's like Lon Chaney Jr basically, lots of fur, claws and fangs. Half moon is the same, but you get the snout too, but your feet don't change. Three-quarters moon, you become a full anthromorphic werewolf. Full moon, well, you become a full quad-ped wolf. Pretty cool, huh?" she said.
You nod and hand over your ten dollar bill, feeling very excited. She places the ring into a a small bag and hands it to you.
"Have fun!" she says as you exit the store.
"I will," you call back.
You arrive home, relieved to find your roommate is gone. Hopefully they will be gone for the rest of the night. You go to your room and close the door behind you. You pull the ring out of the bag and open it. You carefully pull out the directions and unfold them. You skim the introduction, reading that you will change back the following morning after each change. You see a chart documenting the level of change depending on the moon. Then you find, printed in italics, the spell itself. It reads: "Powers that be, by the light of the moon, make me into a werewolf tonight!"
It was a little cheeseball, but would be easy to remember. You glance out the window and notice the sun going down. Soon night would be here. You take a deep breath and check to see what moon it would be tonight. The computer stated it would be a quarter moon. Good, you thought, a nice place to start.
If only night would get here...you were anxious to try it out.
