Caroline Smith, in her black dress and black boots sitting at the back of the classroom, was already bored with Ms. Dunwoody's lecture on the Cuban Missile Crisis and was idly flipping through her history textbook. Somewhere around the Louisiana Purchase, she found a folded-up note stuck between the pages. She didn't think she'd put it in there; she unfolded it.
It turned out to mostly blank, with a typewritten paragraph at the top. It began, "Caroline: Imagine that you can change something about your life." She chuckled to herself as she read it; must have been from some fantasy role-playing thing one of her Goth friends had discovered on the Internet, the idea being for them to read their wishes to each other when the group got together after school.
She came up with several different possibilities: writing something completely ridiculous and tongue-in-cheek occurred to her, but so did creating her ideal life, or maybe something in between.
She picked up a pen and started to write.
