You spend the better part of the day trying to decide if this is some sort of an elaborate hoax. The collar doesn't seem to be very special, though the closer you examine it and the more you handle it, the more tempted you find yourself into putting it on.
You read and reread the brief letter. It wasn't signed by any officer, but it was printed on what appears to be official letterhead of the police department. Eventually, you find yourself deciding to head down to the station to find out EXACTLY what's going on.
When you arrive at the police station, you find that you're not alone in having received a letter. There are five others, three women and two men, and all of you are holding the boxes you've received.
"Attention, if all of you who received a package from us today would please follow me, I'll be more than happy to answer any questions you have," said an officer behind the front desk. He opened the pass-through, and you all filed behind him, following him to a door marked "private".
One inside the room, he motions the six of you to have a seat at the conference table, while he heads to a podium at the front of the room.
"Hello everyone," he says. "I'm Lt. Stevens. I'm in charge of the special projects division of our department. By now, you've all read the letter. This is our newest, and most cutting-edge project of all in the war on crime."
"What sort of a weird joke is this?" asked one of the men.
"I know it seems odd, but I assure you that it's no joke at all. The collar that you have will allow you to transform both into a dog, or into what most folks would call a werewolf if it's dark," the officer replied.
"And you're just going to put that sort of thing out on the street?" you ask.
"No sir," the officer replies to you. "You might think that our selection was random, but I can assure you that the six of you were vetted by our screening process. You've been selected for a variety of criteria, but the main reason being the levels of integrity all of you have shown in your public lives."
"So why not give this to your cop buddies?" asked a woman.
"Because," the officer sighed, "With crime rampant in our city, we've had no choice but to arrive at the conclusion that some of our own men are corrupt. Anyone coming through the academy is similarly suspect. You six are untainted by the system. You haven't been corrupted. You could make a difference in the city."
You glance at the others, who are similarly glancing around the room at each other as well. None of them seem more remarkable or less remarkable than any other or you.
"Any of you are more than welcome to refuse, but we're about to move on to the demonstration portion of the presentation. If you don't want to be a part of the new team, you need to leave the box here and head home," he said to the room.
