Rachel sighed. When did her life become so empty and meaningless? She'd met Bruce while on vacation in Mexico; she was 18, away from her home and family for the first time, and enjoying her freedom.
He was 31, a wealthy corporate man, recently divorced, and also enjoying his new-found freedom. Sure he was older, but he was still a hunk. Skin bronzed from the sun, well-muscled, blue eyes, dark hair, and gleaming white teeth.
She was young, and fell in love easily.
Things were wonderful for several years. The sex was incredible, Rachel wanted for nothing, and Bruce seemed to enjoy showing off his young, pretty wife.
Her family, of course, did not approve, but they'd been repressing her all her life, telling her who to be, and how to live...Bruce said she was better off without them, and she believed it.
But lately, things had soured. Bruce spent more time away from home, on "business trips". Rachel was pretty certain he was cheating on her, although she was afraid to confront him; Bruce had a dangerous temper.
And then she found the divorce papers, half-filled out. "Irreconcilible differences"? Plus a copy of their pre-nuptial agreement, which she'd forgotten about. "Like it will ever matter, honey, I love you, but it's company policy..."
Soon she'd be out on her behind, 26 years old, never having finished high school, with virtually no possessions of her own (he bought everything) and ten thousand dollars (her settlement according to their pre-nup).
Which sounded like a lot, but how far could that last? She needed to make plans, and quickly. Unfortunately, she had no one to turn to; she had no real friends, just acquaintances at best.
She looked at herself in the mirror. Was she still desirable? She wanted to cry, her best idea was to get married again.
That night she went for a drive, when another car sideswiped hers, and she blacked out...
