You and Clay are well over half finished with your side of the lake when the silence of the forest is suddenly broken by a distant scream and a splash. You turn to the lake and faintly see Lee flailing around in the water.
"Oh god!" Clay says. "Lee? Are you all right?"
You squint your eyes. She's about two hundred yards away, so it's hard to tell, but it looks like Lee is in a panic. "Do you know if she can swim?" you ask Clay.
"Yeah, she can," he says. "But...shit, something's wrong."
"It's the lake," you say, somehow sure of that fact. "And if it did this to me...what's it going to..."
You can't bear to finish the thought. Instead, you shove your sneakers off your feet and begin shedding the rest of your clothes.
"What are you doing?" Clay shouts.
"The lake can't do much worse to me," you say, now down to your boxers. "Just meet us over there. If I don't make it, it's up to you."
Clay nods his head. He has a farewell expression on his face, like he's never going to see you again. You wonder if he's right, but quickly turn your complete attention to Lee. You run into the lake, wading up to your waist and then diving head first into a frantic, determined swim.
