"Hey, kid, heard how the speech therapy was going. Now don't feel bad, the rain in Spain may pour lightly on the plain, but you won't have to say that, if what I've got planned works," said Manny talking a mile a minute as soon as the door opened.
"Now wheel in the stuff over there," he says to two orderlies pushing what looks like a big old computer with a couple of metal bowls attached. "Good plug it in, and now git, I need to be alone with my client. When Dr. Stein gets here send him in."
He is silent until he's sure they've gone listening to their retreating footsteps.
"Good, kid, here's the sitch. You're ahead in the polls, but they want you to debate next week, and that can clinch or blow the election for you. I've been stalling, but they say if you're too sick to run, you're too sick to serve. So we gotta have you on that stage in a week, one way or another. I thought we might try another way," he nods and gestures toward the contraption.
He continues, "You see I've got another client. Healthy young jock, but too smart for his own good. He flinches when the ball gets near him. Anyway he remarked he wanted to go into politics like you after his football career is over. I told him, "What football career? If you keep running away from the ball and the other players?" Then it hit me. I met this Dr. Stein on an airplane trip to Philly last year. You know me I need an aisle seat, and lucky me I got Dr. Frank N. Stein sitting next to me. No, not Frankenstein - well, sort of, see his family changed it - shortened it to Stein, but well, they named him Francis Neil Stein, and so he's still Frank N. Stein. It was a long flight. Anyway, that contraption is his, and he says it can transfer the mind from one guy to another. You can be an athletic college jock again, and smarty pants can wear your body to the White House, maybe? If it works, but I figured what the hey - stranger things have happened. Besides, we all get what we want. I get two clients who get to do what they want and can do best, and I get hefty commissions because of it. But right now I got a football player who can't play and is running for office but couldn't debate his way out of a wet paper bag, and politician who's unknown and playing football for name recognition, but too afraid to catch the ball. So this seems like the only option - God forgive me."
There's a knock at the door.
