Rick shook her head again. She didn't know how she was going to explain her change. "Maybe I won't have to explain anything" she muttered to herself looking around her room. "Reality seems to have changed too from what I can see."
Her hopes were dashed when her mom knocked on her door and said "Rick. Something strange has happened. All your pictures have changed. They now show a girl instead of you. Does your driver's license still have your picture on it?"
Taking a deep breath Rick said "I don't know if I have a license anymore."
"Who do you have in there?" her mom asked.
"It's just me in here Mom" Rick said. "It's not just my pictures that changed. Come in and you'll see."
Rick saw her door open in the mirror and her mom walk in. Her mom closed the door and said "This better not be a joke."
"I wish it was a joke Mom" Rick said. "I'm a girl now."
"How?" her mom asked.
"I don't know" she said with a sigh. "I'll tell you what I do know though. I was at the mall walking around when I saw this store called Helpful Things. I went in and this old guy asked me what was troubling me. I told him Sandie had broke up with me and was evidently seeing another guy. He said he had just the thin for me and gave me this ring." She held up her hand and pointed to the ring before continuing "He said that if I put it on it would take care of most of my girlfriend problems. Well I left the store then I thought that maybe I'd find something for you and Dad something but when I turned around the store was gone. I came home and put the ring on. That's when I was transformed."
"Well he was right" her mom said. "Most of your girlfriend problems are gone. Of course they may be replaced by boyfriend problems."
"Mom!" she said in a whiny voice. "I like girls."
"So you're gay now?" her mom asked with a smile on her face.
"You know I'm straight" she said looking back into the mirror.
"Well then you'll be attracted to boys" her mother said nodding to the picture.
She sighed and said "Well I guess. It seems I do have a boyfriend in this new reality and I suppose I could see if I could like him. Though I don't know his name or even my own for that matter."
"Well I'm betting that you keep a diary" her mom said. "Your boyfriend's name should be in there. I'll check your Birth Certificate for your new name."
As her mom left she looked around her room. Where would her diary be? She searched in her dresser and didn't find it there. She looked under her mattress though it wasn't there either. She looked all over her room for her diary with no luck. Maybe she didn't have a diary. Well there was nothing she could do about it if she didn't though it would be helpful to learn about her new life. She looked around her room again. The only place she hadn't checked for her diary was on her computer. Somehow she knew it wasn't on there though. She sat down on her bed and began to think. Her eyes fell on her bookshelf as she started to lay back on her bed. She got back up and ran her hand over one shelf and the books there. One book felt a little strange so she tried to pull it out. Instead the spine swung out on a hinge to reveal a six digit combination lock. All the numbers were set to 0. Shrugging she decided to try her birth date though she had no real hope of it working. If it was her birth date she wouldn't know it since she would have a new one now.
She was surprised when there was a click after she entered her old birth date. The side of the bookcase swung open a bit and she opened it the rest of the way. Inside the secret compartment was one of those new diaries that only opened with the correct password and voice. She closed the compartment and returned the combination to all 0s before closing the fake spine. Sitting down on her bed she pondered what the password could be. Shrugging she said "Girls rule."
An electronic voice said "Incorrect password."
"Girls rock" she tried after a moment's thought.
"Incorrect password" the device said again.
She sighed and looked around her room. Trying to guess the right password could take forever. Then her eyes fell on one of her posters and smiling she said "Gypsy moon."
There was a little click and the device said "Welcome back...
