I groggily woke up to bright sunlight shining on my face, and I realized I might be late to work. My hand went up to brush something off of my face. It was long and stringy, and I pulled on it to discover it was my own blond hair. I groaned as I remembered what happened yesterday. Soon after Ed had let us into his house, the events of the very long day caught up to me and I fell asleep on a couch. I was still lying on that couch, feeling stiff now. I sat up and looked at my surroundings. The house was neat, and many of the furnishings looked like antiques. The large screen LCD TV in front of me definitely wasn't antique, though. I was the only person in the room, and a quick search of the rest of the house revealed it to be empty of other people. In a bathroom, I washed off the day old make-up and lipstick. Without it on, Kelly's face looked even more sweet and innocent. I sighed and went to sit back down on the couch, waiting for someone to show up. While sitting, my fingers involuntarily started twirling my long hair.
After about half an hour, I gave up and went outside looking for Sidney or Ed. The main sounds in Logan's Corner were coming from a flock of small birds happily chirping in a tree. I went over to the tavern and found Sidney sitting at one of the tables. She had opened one of the manila envelopes and was leafing through a leather bound notebook filled with hand-written notes and figures. She looked up and said, "Hello there. You finally woke up."
Ed then came from the back room. "There you are. Ready for lunch?"
I hadn't realized how late it was. "Oh gosh! It's like, lunchtime already?"
Ed looked at Sidney and asked, "Are you sure that this girl has it goin' on upstairs?"
"As if! It was like, totally Sidney's machine that made me talk like an airhead."
Sidney laughed and then said, "Sorry, sometimes I still find that accent funny. Anyway, she's telling the truth. When she was changed, a side-effect from the prototype made her start talking like that. She is NOT a dumb blonde. She's just... blond."
"Well, okay then. I trust you." He looked back up at me. "Well miss, would you like some lunch?"
It will take a while to get used to being called 'miss.' I answered, "I could totally go for some munchies."
Ed went back to cook while I sat down with the girl. She went back to reading her notes and soon became engrossed in them. The lunch Ed prepared was good. Afterwards I found myself wanting to return to my home. Sidney wasn't sure this was a good idea, though.
"The agents might still be out there looking for us. This is the perfect place for us to wait and hide for a while. Ed's a good guy, he's already said that he will let us live here for now. I'll be sleeping in his guest bedroom."
"I might be like, trapped in this body, but I still have my house. I'd be totally happier there. Besides, those agents don't know who I am, you know? They never got a good look at me."
"True. Okay, but I'll be staying here for now. Be careful, and don't let anyone know who you really are." She paused. "You will be coming back here, right? When you do, could you bring your laptop? Ed has a computer, but it's a little slow for my taste."
I was grateful Sidney would be helping me get my body back, but her occasional bossiness could be annoying. I got into Kelly's sports coupe and made my way through the country roads towards the city. The thought of being able to return to my own house brought comfort to me. At least I'd be able to keep some part of my own life even though I was stuck in the body of this bimbo. On the outskirts of the city, I stopped at a gas station to fill up Kelly's car. While there, I used the pay phone to call my work. I claimed to be my own cousin and told them that I would not be able to come in for a while due to a very bad illness. Work was sympathetic, but told me that once my sick time was used up I wouldn't be paid anymore.
I reached my neighborhood in the late afternoon. When I reached my house, what I saw made me gasp in fear. Parked across the street was one of the now familiar white vans. Through the tinted windows I could see a couple of people waiting inside. I drove on, wondering what I was going to do. Now I was trapped in Kelly's body, driving her car, and I couldn't even return to my home without being caught by government agents. I felt despair as I realized how my old life was now completely stolen from me.
